well that stinks if that’s what happened. but don’t i at least get the chance to apply for the chancellor’s scholarship? online it just said anybody who is top 5% of their high school class with sat scores above 1400 will be invited to apply. also i was invited to apply for the guaranteed medical school program, so how is it that i was competitive enough to get that but not competitive enough to qualify for the chancellor’s scholarship?

Maybe they might give you an answer if you call.

Here is what they have on the website, I believe the keyword there is “typically”:
<<

How do I apply for the Chancellor’s Scholarship, and what are the criteria to be invited?

Competition for the Chancellor’s Scholarship is by invitation only. Nominations are made by the University Scholarship Committee. The application is mailed to all of the Chancellor’s Nominees with a return deadline date. Nominees typically:

* Are in the top 5 percent of their graduating class.
- Have above a 3.5 out of 4.0 grade point average (GPA).
- Have a minimum combined SAT score of 1400 or 32 ACT. >>

Aaaargh! Yesterday we got ANOTHER letter that we thought would be about the Chancellor’s Scholarship, but it wasn’t. That’s three in a row!

jimpta12 I have similar stats as yours and I have yet to hear about scholarships either. There were a few people on these threads who applied very early, myself included, who may have just fallen through the cracks this year. I heard back about my admission in October and applied in May of last year. Pitt seems to be really random about who they give scholarships to, despite the fact that our stats seem to be in line with those who previously received them.

i called them today and they said they won’t be done reviewing scholarship eligibility for another month. hopefully we’re still in the running.

submitted app in december 15 bc of med school and they got back like early january with the acceptance to the school early january. Then got Honors college/guaranteed Engineering like Jan 10. Then january 15 got invited to guaranteed med school. then like January 20th. Got full Tuition and got invited for Chancellor’s scholarship.

What are the requirements like? are interviews really mandated. if so do they pay for travel expenses as I have already visited once and i live in California.

After you submit your application, they will either invite you for the interview or turn you down. I don’t believe they pay for the travel expenses.

Due to the quick turn around time, a lot of students do not bother to apply for Chancellors as they are happy with their full tuition and if you have received outside scholarships – they will apply it to the room/board etc.

Somewhare (on CC no doubt) stats have been posted for Chancellor winners. I read that those invited last year had no Bs at all (which would have knocked my DD out because she had a B on the senior year mid-year report–many more followed). She was a NMS with great grades, great SAT scores and national language test scores, a two-sport varsity athlete, and had nice ECs with honors. No interview. The interview must mandatory because that is how they select from the 100 invited to interview and I have not heard anything about Pitt paying expenses–but someone else might know. 10 winners is an itty-bitty number, but some one wins.

^ I think the decision whether a person is selected for an interview or not has a lot more to do with the essays than anything else.

I won the chancellors scholarship past year and I had a B in freshman year. My friend also won with 2 B’s. I promise you, I have had extensive conversations on this matter with the very people who decide who interviews and there is no one factor which is arbitrarily applied to canidates AFTER you have made the first cut and gotten an invitation to the interviews.

I doubt that. My son has already been awarded full tuition and was invited to apply for the Chancellor’s Scholarship even though he has three grades lower than a B. (Yes, you read that right. No one should lose hope based solely on their grades.) I assume he would not have been invited to apply if he had no chance of getting the scholarship. This leads me to believe that it’s not your grades alone, but the balance of grades and the difficulty of classes you’ve taken, perhaps combined with other circumstances. My son, for example, has attended three high schools in four years; maybe Pitt thinks that a couple of low grades are permissible under difficult circumstances.

Yes, the Pitt website states that the interview is mandatory:

[Chancellor’s Scholarship](http://www.honorscollege.pitt.edu/opportunities/chan-scholarship.html)

I believe once you have made the final cut and reached the interview stage – everyone has an equal chance for the chancellors. The interview is what they use to determine the winners and it is mandatory.

It sometimes seems like Pittsburg’s been sending out as many useless letters as possible during this time period to annoy Chancellor’s applicants. Example: A letter addressed to my family informing me that I had been accepted to Honor’s College (I’ve known for months). The letter even started with “Congratulations!” What a tease.

Seriously! We’ve stopped getting excited about anything that arrives from Pitt, because it’s always something that looks like a Chancellor’s Scholarship notification letter, but isn’t.

Ah, who am I kidding? We get very excited. The Chancellor’s Scholarship would be so awesome.

Have you guys gotten the crappy t-shirt from UHC yet? Last year all the people who got into UHC got sent this t-shirt condensed into a little cube in the mail and the fun part was taking it out of the cube. But the shirt quality was so cheap… it was white, oversized and thinner than even the typical craft store Gildan t-shirt. If you’re a girl it was unwearable because it was almost see-through. My friends and I had a good laugh about it.

Don’t forget about the car decals – I think we got one with every letter :)

Just got the no interview letter today. Oh well I still have full tuition. Now I am waiting to see if I get an interview for the guaranteed med program (fingers crossed)

I second or third (which ever we’re at) the frustration with all the ‘fluff’ mail. It is so unnerving, I really just want to find out, either way about the interview, and be done with it…

As for fun gifties- i haven’t gotten anything besides a magnet and a little plastic card with phone numbers. I had a few friends last year accepted to Pitt and the HC and they got so much stuff- where is ours cut backs maybe? I could certainly go for a few less mailers if it meant a tshirt of something like that.

sorry to hear that sportgreet… when did u send out your application? Good luck with the guaranteed med program!

Really? We haven’t gotten even one. :(
