So I got the Chancellor's Scholarship. Are there any current scholarship holders out there, or perhaps people that are still deciding on whether or not to attend Pitt? I'm currently facing a very tough decision, and I'd appreciate hearing other people's stories, about what pulled them one way or another in order to attend Pitt (or not).

Congrats on the Chancellor’s and your acceptance to JHU. Definitely a tough choice, I had to choose between UChicago and Pitt w/ full tuition, ended up choosing Pitt. Though I wasn’t planning on majoring in Bio-engineering, math for me, I also am considering med school. That was a major reason I ended up choosing Pitt.

I noticed you mentioned on another thread that it would by 80k debt with JHU, tack on roughly 150k or more debt if you end up in med school, that’s a lot of debt. And to be honest, while prestige does play some factor in med school admissions, the main criteria for med school admission are GPA, MCAT score, and ec’s (research/volunteer work). Clearly GPA and MCAT scores wouldn’t be an issue for you, and Pitt offers a ton of research opportunities with medicine and bioengineering, some of the stuff they’re working on at the McGowan Institute is pretty incredible.

You also mentioned that JHU’s campus is nicer, to each their own I guess, but I find Oakland and Pittsburgh in general much nicer than Baltimore.

Good luck with your decision, hope I was of some assistance

I think it will actually be 20k in debt. 80k is how much I have saved, and Hopkins would cost around 100k. Other people have been telling me that 20k is not bad at all for Hopkins, but I’m still really torn.

Congrats kommunitykollege!

If you don’t mind my asking, what did your letter say? How were you notified, and by when do you have to let Pitt know? I also have JHU as one of my options, but financing Hopkins is way tougher for me.

I was notified Tuesday the 12th of April through email (I later got a real letter), and the decision was due on Tuesday the 19th. The staff at Pitt are very flexible though, and if you need an extension for your decision, they are more than willing to give it.

The letter simply stated the rigor of the selection process and elaborated on why Pitt would be good choice.

DD had visited JHU several times over her time in school (we live nearby), and she did not apply there because of the area of Baltimore where it is located. Her top choices were Chicago and Georgetown; she chose Pitt for its tuition scholarship and is a sophomore. She has been quite challenged and has not regretted her choice. she has a good friend she has known since middle school who chose Pitt over Cornell and Carnegie Mellon and he is happy too.

As a parent, I am much happier with the smaller, safer, friendlier city of Pittsburgh.

Good luck with your choice. And congratulations!

I also recieved the Chancellor’s Scholarship. Congrats to you kommunitykollege! I made the choice based on two criteria, finances and availibility of research and student assistance. While finances were inevitabely the decision-factor, I only really accepted Pitt as an option during my interview. While speaking with the Dean and the other interviewers, it was really clear that the administration will do everything in its power to help a student reach their full potential, whether that be through study abroad or availible scholarship oppertunities. I ended up realizing that they would allow me to really pursue what I wanted, so I chose Pitt.

Hope you can make a decision quickly! And congrats!

I might be getting in on this a little bit late, but I was selected as a chancellor’s scholar too. Georgetown was my next choice, but after talking with a lot of the administration at Pitt, the choice seemed pretty easy. Glad I finally found some other people who were picked! I didn’t really know where to look. Hope you make whatever choice is right for you. Good luck!
