Does anyone know (a) if an application to UNL is a national merit finalist is the Chancellor's Scholarship (full tuition plus stipend) basically automatic, or is there a chance you would apply and not get it? And (b) when do you hear about whether you've gotten merit scholarships from UNL? Is it rolling (i.e., could you know soon) or do you have to wait until the spring?

Thanks. We're comparing UNL and Alabama and Oklahoma, both of which are automatic for NMFs.

Ugh. I can’t remember timing. My oldest applied rolling, and I ‘think’ she got notifed fairly quickly(maybe a month) after acceptance that she’d gotten a George Beadle Scholarship (for out of state merit). That one was “almost” automatic based on GPA, and IB diploma.

Darn. Threw out D’s stuff from 2 years ago except for schools S is applying to now.

But I believe acceptance came fast and NMF scholarship offer very soon after, couched in the usual wording about contingent on achieving NMF and naming them 1st choice, etc… I recall phoning them as the wording on their website about the scholarship seemed ambiguous. They assured me it was completely automatic. That was 2 years ago, so you could call and double check to see if it is still the same if you are concerned. It was easy to get through to a live human and they were very helpful.

There are some other extra leadership scholarships and such you can apply for separately. These may have later notification, but didn’t apply for them so don’t know. Also, the $500 book scholarship comes after the honors app is processed and you are accepted to honors program.

At that time, kids living in honors dorm got free printing.

My son is also NMSF and I asked this question on our visit in July. They had arranged a one-on-one lunch with a person from the scholarship office. He told us the NMF scholarship was automatically awarded but we have nothing in writing. I second what @celesteroberts suggested to call them and ask. I don’t know about the timing and I can’t remember if Nebraska is one of the schools that has sent a mailing acknowledging his status now or not.

S hasn’t even applied and they’ve sent a mailing acknowledging his status and offering scholarship, ha. They are one of the schools that have the NMSF lists and send out mass mailings

I just found this site a few days ago and just wanted to let you know that my son received the same and Jan 7 was sent the letter that he received the Chancellor’s scholarship which covers tuition. We are visiting this Monday. I’ll you know how it goes. I agree that other colleges could learn from UNL. They are very fast with their response.
@twinker Congratulations to your son! Jan 7 seems really early for notification for the Chancellor’s scholarship. Is your son a National Merit Finalist?
S received notification of Chancellor’s scholarship in his myRed account today under "View Financial Aid button on Home page. He hasn’t yet gotten an email or a letter. He is NMF and has UNL down as his First Choice. We have one more visit to another school for spring break at the end of March so that might change, but for now, Nebraska is the solid front runner!
My son also just received the same notification regarding the Chancellor’s Scholarship. He’s pretty much committed to Nebraska now over Alabama, because of family in Omaha. Go Big Red!
That’s great @pdbauer1959 We have family in Nebraska too and that is also part of the reason for my son’s attraction to UNL. He’s also grown up among Cornhusker fans in the family who have never even lived in the state!
Does anyone know if they pay your fees and give you a $2,000 stipend, or do you use the stipend to cover fees?
The Chancellor’s scholarship only covers tuition, not fees. So yes, you would have to pay fees from the $2000 stipend or another source.
