Hello CC… I have read all the forums on SAT and ACT and Brown… and I love Brown so much that I had to get an account and ask if I stood a chance… Be brutally honest, or just tell me that these threads are annoying and pointless! A guy can dream…

Ethnicity- South Korean - Asian (adopted)
Fluent in English/Spanish

SAT I - 2340
CR- 780
M - 760
W - 800

ACT - 32 Composite, and across all subjects

AP (Chemistry, Physics, English Lit, Gov, and Eco coming senior year)
Spanish - 4
English Lang - 5

I think you have a really great chance, but I wouldn’t send the ACT with a 2340 SAT. I’m not going to say you’re a shoo-in or anything, but Brown is definitely a possibility.

“I have a pending patent on a polymer that catalyzes glucose in a fuel cell as well…”
^I think this sounds really interesting and unique. Not very many 16/17 year olds have pending patents.

For an Asian applicant everything seems average except for the patent and the success in the science fair that you listed, which will undoubtedly spark some attention in admission counselors. If anything is going to push you towards the top of thousands of very qualified applications, expect it to be this very scientific pull. Your GPA appears slightly sluggish in comparison to similar applicants, and this could hurt. Brown is a reach school for anybody, and to substantiate this claim I always tell the story of how my valedvictorian this year with a 2370 SAT, and 3.99 GPA was rejected. I can’t express the importance of applying Early Decision, as it WILL increase your admission chances. In addition, devote alot of time to your essays and I would suggest using your strongest and most unique asset (science) to set yourself apart. Also, it is very important to prepare very strenuously for your interview. Understand that unlike many other prestigious universities, many students apply because they are absolutely enamored with the school rather than its reputation. It is not uncommon for applicants to attend Brown over HYPMS, and it is this genuine interest in Brown that you should try to express (or at least imitate) throughout the application process. Do not send your ACT scores, as your SAT is much more suitable. If possible make an attempt at boosting your extracurriculars during senior year to show you have both depth and breadth. Good Luck!

mm thank you very much mexicandelight. A very honest opinion… I had absolutely terrible grades my freshmen year… a 3.5/5 but for my sophomore and junior year my GPA rose to a 4.7 per year approx…

I am going to apply ED to Brown… it is my top choice and I am in love with the curriculum and the school… I’m not sure if ED will really increase my chances though, I feel that because of my low GPA I will be deferred… but I will see in December I guess.

No, I competed at Intel, but as with most fairs sometimes it’s just hard to make anyone like your project. I got a Silver Medal at I-SWEEEP, another international competition. Of course however, it just sounds better to say 2nd place.
I’m applying to Siemens in the fall with a Methyl Viologen Mediated Glucose Fuel Cell that uses a modified polypyrrole. Hopefully I can pull of Finalist, but kids who are like the majority of CC make it difficult hahaha.

Jesus, i feel so under accomplished and still got into Brown and a bunch of other great colleges.
Guys, you don’t have to be Einstein at the age of 17 to get into an Ivy league. Keep that in mind. There are not enough worldwide science fairs to fill all ivy league spots, haha

I don’t have any special tips. I’m just annoyed by all the people that spam in the chance me threads and pretend as if every Ivy League student is a gift from heaven…
THAT IS NOT THE CASE, although there are some remarkable people. If you apply to college, you are 17-18 years old. There is only so much you could have done. People that have a 4 page CV at that age have serious problems. Show the admission committee that you have potential. If you do that, I heard it’s possible to get into an Ivy without winning Intel, lol

Lebronjames, like a hook or whatever? Im bit too sure. Perhaps if I can have my work patented and be a finalist in siemens before the ED deadline…

Not everybody has a killer hook. Some people just have good grades, good scores and some standard ECs and that got them in. I discussed with some friends from different Ivies the admission process and somehow we got talking about CC. Bottom line. Don’t listen to a bunch of 16/17 year old kids that think they know the master plan to get into college. Ivy League is a crap shot for everybody except for that one dude that won Intel and the other one that discovered a cancer treatment at the age of 12
You never know what the admission committee sees in you…

Edit: And 2340 is a GREAT score for any school. People that tell you differently… well I could tell you in a PM what I think about them, haha

hey, i’m a south korean with a lower sat score who was admitted to brown… as with every application process at selective universities, you never know, but i think you are a great applicant who definitely has a great shot… you got a marvelous score, and gpa (top 10%) seems to be good as well. so try to make your application more attractive by writing good essays and so on.

i’m definitely no einstein, who has written a work worthy of a nobel prize at the age of 18. so don’t be too obsessed with “hooks” and awards… all you have to do is convince the admissions office that you got potential and are a great fit at brown

SoWhat?, hahah (irony), thank you so much. That’s all very true… I guess I am just worried that because I am not that kid I won’t be seem as valuable or as having potential.

Of course, I am forcing myself to accept that being rejected doesn’t mean I should go throw myself into the Grand Canyon. And thanks about the score… I saw a thread that said “2340… Retake??” and I was like… nnoo!!

From my experience I can simply tell you ESSAYS ARE KEY

I was the only 1 out of 24 kids to get accepted at Brown and I go to a prettu prestigious high school. There were kids who definitely had a higher GPA than I did but my talent lies in writing essays so I think that in joint with writing about diversity was what got in me in
