I go to one of the top 10 prep schools in the country, went to arguably the best but transferred out after 3 years, my unweighted GPA was pretty good, mid 3s, then dipped sophomore-junior year, now back up to about 3.1 and rising senior year. I'm going to attach an explanation for the dip (it's a good reason I guess) on my apps but it's still obviously an issue.

Minority Status (Hispanic)

SAT I: 2340/2400
SAT II Bio: 630
SAT II Lit: 730
SAT II Spanish: 740
SAT II Spanish w/Listening: No score yet
SAT II Math IIC: No score yet

Calculus AB AP: 3 (not going to send I don't think)
English Language AP: 4
Spanish Language AP: 5

A lot of community service ECs, got injured so no sports anymore, National Merit Semifinalist, 15 years classical piano, some other stuff I can throw in too like work experience

I have a strong courseload.

What are my chances at:

USC
Vanderbilt
Emory
Michigan
GWU
BC
Tufts
Lehigh
Wake Forest

Really? I'm only half, and I'm not the minority candidate they probably picture, I'm from an affulent family, live in an affluent neighborhood, and have gone to prep school all my life. Still, I'm sure it helps somewhat.

Any other colleges I should consider? Any ones a little tougher to get into that I should throw on there?

I am applying to all the UCs...UCLA seems really tough out-of-state. Any other schools I have some kind of shot at?

Washington U St. Louis
Johns Hopkins
Fordham
Brandeis

are options -- it's hard to make suggestions without an idea of your preferences (geographic, major, m/f ratio, merit money, etc). I'd agree however, that your SATs + GPA greater than 3.0 make you competitive at any school (why no Ivys?).

I also have Brandeis on my list, I forgot to mention it.

I guess I don't have narrow list of preferences, I prefer California and warm weather but a lot of the good schools are around the northeast so I'm looking everywhere. Tuition/scholarship is not important.

I'm looking to major in economics, maybe management or finance. Any Ivies that you would recommend? I'm a legacy at Yale, by the way, but I don't think I have a shot there.

Hispanic, AND 2340.. AND Yale Legacy????.you'd be a fool not to apply to Yale. You're in at everyschool not named Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, or MIT.

not with a 3.1, his list up there is fine. God some people have a convoluted perception. Don't you think that there are hispanic students with good gpas too?

How good of a prep school did you go to? Top prep school usually do get ivy admits with 3.0-3.3 GPAs. A breakdown of GPA (9th,10th,etc) would also help.

Let me break it down for you...
-There is absolutely nothing wrong with your GPA coming out of your school. Most CCers don't understand the rigor of your school.
-A 2340 is ridiculous
-Affirmative Action will help

You should get into most of the schools on your list, but you should throw some applications out to the Ivy league as well.

Our public high school (75% Hispanic) has at least 8 students with better statistics (all Hispanic). That's your competition. However, Yale legacy weighs heavily. Don't be afraid to apply anywhere.

Phillips Andover? Be proud you got that 3.1, thats extremely high for a Phillips school. Ever notice why 15% of Princeton students have below a 3.7 when admitted? Because they come from schools like yours.
