which engineering colleges(mechanical or computer science) do I have a chance with?
ACT:34
SAT 2150
good extracirriculars, golf and recommendations with strong essays.
Please help me?
Thanks

You should put a little more information like where your from, ethinicity, gender etc.
Also say what type of schools you are interested in (urban vs. rural, small vs. large, state vs. private etc). Then someome should get you a good list of schools.

Hi-

It does not matter I want to know if I have chances with a good school – top 20 engineering school. The schools can be in the north east, I am Asian
Is Cornell doable. Thanks

OK. Top 20 engineering schools + Top 10 teaching engineering schools in the Northeast:

R1 Massachusetts Institute of Technology
R6 Carnegie Mellon University
R11 Cornell University
R17 University of Maryland–College Park (Clark)
R18 Harvard University
R18 Princeton University
T3 Cooper Union
T4 United States Military Academy
T5 United States Naval Academy
T8 Bucknell University
T9 Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering
T10 Villanova University

Judging just based on composite test scores and GPA (which is not the easiest or most accurate thing to do) and leaving out the service academies (because they are special cases)

I don’t think you’ll get into: MIT, Harvard, Princeton
Your reaches are: CMU, Cornell
Your matches are: UMD, Cooper Union, Bucknell, Olin, Villanova

Another potential match that just missed out on the Top 20 criteria is Penn State.

But it does matter…

It also matters what you’re looking for: BS, MS, PhD ???

RPI, WPI and Rochester are also matches.

B.S Engineering
I am planning to report only ACT not SAT.
How about U of Michigan, Stevens Inst of Tech, NJIT??

Stevens is Ranked #77 and NJIT isn’t ranked (100+). Neither are even close to Top 20. Michigan (which isn’t in the Northeast) is a reach based on GPA, but you’ve got a better chance there than any of the other reaches.

If you want a real idea, you need to break down the ACT score into sections, your GPA by class, post your class rank, list EC’s, etc.

If you’re just starting your college research (which is sounds like you are) there are other sections on this site (and others) to help you.

I don’t know about Olin being a match. Olin’s average SAT is 55 (last time I checked) points higher than MIT’s and they have an extremely low admission rate. The fact that you’re asian won’t help you, either.

Olin’s ACT interquartile range is 32-35. He’s certainly in there. The average Olin WGPA is 4.0, his WGPA is 4.0.

The reason Olin’s numbers are so high is that it only admits about 125 students a year. It’s easy to keep your stats high with such a small incoming freshman class.

A couple of safety schools could be Clarkson (NY) and Alfred (NY).

since I am losing confidence that my UW GPA will be looked negatively,
Also even though I score 800 in Math SAT 1 and in SAT,
my school AP CALC BC is a B grade with at 5 score and my AP’s Chem , Physics will be B’s.
My school has a tough reputation and difficult finals:((

Are Drexel, Penn State good in which engineering?
I would have liked Harvey Mudd, hopefully 2011 is a better year.

Have you done any research, or are you just naming colleges?

I would like to give you some hope with my son’s MIDWEST experience. I know you are looking in the northeast, but we were pleasantly surprised. My son is a senior this year, with a 3.4 UWGPA and 3.8 WGPA (end of junior year) and 34 ACT. (He did worse on SAT, but we sent them the scores anyway, and he also took SAT II Math II and Physics). He got accepted EA to these schools in engineering - UIUC, UW-Madison, Purdue, Minn-Twin Cities (scholarship), Ohio State (scholarship), NC State (honors invitation). He got deferred from Ga Tech. There are a couple of other schools where his application is pending.

My advice is do your research and send in solid, well-thought out essays. Good luck.

i would definitely give georgia tech a shot.
