Chances? accepted, had to decline, re-applying. difference between 3.6/3.7?

Hey, I'm an international student and I'm applying to a couple of colleges this year out of my country's university. I'll be a junior next year. I applied to a few schools last year and was accepted to ALL of them (Boston College, USC, Tufts, Northeastern, NYU and more) but my family circumstances didn't let me go, which was so, so devastating. : (

Now I have to re-apply this year, and because I've taken more classes and harder classes, my GPA is now about 3.66. My major GPA is about 3.8, with B's in large GE classes/language classes. One upsetting aspect is, I have a 'C' in one course (my first and only C, ever,) because I was ill during exam period, and without this grade my cumulative GPA would be about 3.7. But I have what I have. I have very good essays and I think pretty good recommendations, and I am a Dean's list student. I also have participated in many activities, and not just different kinds but consistently.

What are my chances for these schools?
Northeastern
Boston College
Claremont McKenna
USC
NYU
UCB, UCLA, UCSD
University of San Diego

I think you guys can see the kind of schools I'm applying to. What do you think? I know they say 3.6 is "competitive" and "average" but most people on here who seem to get in seem to have a higher GPA than this. I'm borderline so I'm worried and want opinions.

My grade trend is this: I have a 4.0 the first term in college, then for the next two terms my GPA fell because I was devastated I found out I couldn't go to the schools I applied to (also because of that C : (), then I started to pick up momentum again and have had a 3.75-3.8 GPA for the two terms after that.

Do you think I should explain my 'C' grade? The problem is, I don't even have a doctor's note to prove it since it was a one-day thing, and I think it sounds so much like just a whiny excuse, you know, "I didn't do well in this course because I was sick".

Is there a big difference between 3.66 and 3.7? Like when I look at it, 3.7 just seems so much more solid.

Thanks for your help : )

I’d be devastated too if I was unable to go to NYU if I got accepted. It’s so hard to get in anyways, and to then not be able to go…

I don’t think there’s a HUGE difference. It just seems like that to you cos you’re so worried about it, but I don’t think admissions comittee’s will reject or accept you if your GPA is .04 points either way.

From what I’ve researched, essays play a HUGE part in your application, and since you’ve already applied, you should have a decent essay there. Good Luck!

Whats your major btw?

You got a C because you were sick for one day? It doesn’t make sense. Just accept that you screwed up that course and don’t look for excuses. Your chances are high anyways for the schools you’re applying to any trouble would come from UCLA,USC, and NYU.

@giantmidget - My major’s econ. I’m thinking of education, maybe, but my college doesn’t offer courses so I haven’t really started. It’s so hard to go through this process again, but I want it so bad I’m gonna do it!!! I guess I’m just not used to seeing a GPA below 3.7 and everybody on these boards that post ‘accepted’ decisions seem to have 3.8’s, 3.9’s and 4.0’s. Thanks for your help.

@milanista - Yeah I know, that’s why I say I have the grade I have and didn’t explain anything on my application. I’ve tried to make it up by doing well in everything else. Good to know my chances are high, thanks.

@HAFH - If you apply to CAS Econ at NYU, you’ll probably have a higher shot since it’s not as highly ranked as Stern Econ.

Any other opinions for a 3.66 GPA? I also found out from my school office that one of my grades might be a mistake and is a B instead of A. I sure do hope it is : /

I wonder how much SAT’s will weigh in?

A 3.66 is not bad, but if all you have is your GPA that’s not going to cut it at these schools. Do you work, participate in clubs, intern, or volunteer? These are very important for admissions. It also depends on your course load and the difficultly of your classes.

Yeah, I participated in a lot of clubs, ecs, and work consistently. Everything I do that’s on my activities I’ve done for at least 4 years, and there’s a lot of stuff on my activities section.

I’ve tried to take challenging courses; for some reason I get really good grades in my upper-class courses and seem to get Bs in my larger, general education classes. I don’t know if that’s good or not.

LOL, same here. I got a B in history, but all A’s in rigorous science/math courses. Since you have a lot of extracurriculars, I am assuming you’ll have a decent chance. Keep in mind that the colleges you’re applying to are difficult to get into. I have a similar gpa, it’s a bit higher though. I am even nervous that I won’t get accepted to any of the schools I applied to even with my heavy courseload, letters of rec, work, extracurriculars, and internships. But, good luck hopefully you’ll get in!
