So I go to a medium-large public high school in Michigan, about 1800 people. I applied to MIT under EA and was deferred. Two other people from my school also applied EA but got in- one got in for cross-country, I believe, and the other participated in MIT's MITES program. Another person has applied to MIT regular decision. I am taking deferral as a good sign since they didn't outright reject me. I don't want to turn this into a full-blown chances thread, but in general, does MIT tend to accept multiple people from the same school, all who would be considered strong candidates?

I'm in the same boat as you. A whopping SEVEN kids got accepted to Yale SCEA from my school. I got deferred along with another student. The school says that the amount accepted from the ED round will not affect the admissions decision of a RD student. I would assume MIT has a similar policy.

MIT does not accept actively recruit for MIT all that much. (Just fyi.)

I wish I knew about this too. For the past five years, MIT has always accepted one guy and one girl from the senior class from my high school.. :(

Going to the same school has no effect on admission -- MIT applications aren't read regionally or by school. If multiple people from the same school have compelling applications, they will all be accepted.

Two of us from my (large suburban) high school were accepted my year, and we were the first two people ever to be admitted to MIT from my school. It didn't matter that we were in the same year, because we weren't compared with each other.

yea if they were already willing to accept 7, why wouldnt they accept another one. Using your logic that it does matter what school, then only 1-2 of those 7 shoulda been accepted.

im glad it doesnt matter because my school is really competitive and i know we will have atleast 5 or so applicants next year

I know this is quite circumstantial, but in my school, one other girl and I applied to MIT EA. She got in, I was deferred. Then RD, a third girl (who had applied RD) and I were both accepted. The other two students who applied from our school were rejected.

My son was one of two accepted from his high school last year; as far as he knew, they were the only two applicants. Both are now freshmen at MIT.

At this time in the application season, my advice to all is to forget about admission statistics and trends, and to consider your individual chances as 50-50 (accepted or rejected).

With a ~40% chance of disappointment...
