I have similar stats and I was also deferred. According to State’s website, approx. 16% of deferred applicants were later accepted for admission last year. I’m so scared… State is my first choice and I hope I get in.

What was your selected majors?

Biology, one of the hardest majors at NSCU…

Yeah my first choice is UNC but my chances are probably lower there than with State so Im hoping straight A’s will help get me in. I chose biology also as my major. You think adding another major option would increase my chances?

YES definitely. NC State is split up into smaller colleges within the school. Your application is considered for the first major you chose on your application, and if they decide not to accept you to that program, they consider you for the second major. On my application I made sure my first and second choice major werer in different colleges with different requirements so I had a better chance at getting in . ( College of engineering was my first choice and is hard to get into, so I put Biochemistry in college of life sciences/agriculture as my second choice because it is easier to get into)

I found this in NCSU faqs it looks like you might be able to send them an email or letter to change your application and add a second major…

Hope you get in! :)

That’s a smart idea to do both major choices in different areas of colleges… I made a mistake and applied for both Business Administration and Economics, which are at the same college, so If I don’t get in my first choice, I probably won’t get in my second choice…? Crap…

Hmm… just an update, I just found out I got deferred. Looks like my plan didn’t work! And like you State is my second choice, but still I’m kind of surprised. Maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned engineering so much in my essay? Oh well. I still hope we all get in!

Its funny being in state I figured State was a sure thing but more than I expected were deferred from my school even though I had a 29 ACT i too was deferred for political science… was slightly shocked especially the same day I received my Pittsburgh acceptance

Their whole system is just screwed up

Actually, it’s not. If accepted you know that you are already in your major rather than having to take a bunch of Gen. Ed. requirements for two years and then try to get accepted into a major with lots of competition. How much worse would it be to go for a couple of years thinking you were headed toward a certain major and then maybe not getting in? Then you would have to rearrange your whole college/major plan (maybe involving a transfer).

Its just frustraiting knowing that other people with lower stats and qualifications than me and others have been accepted while we were deferred.

Well, your test scores are definitely low for State. That’s really the only thing off, I’m pretty shocked actually.
Biology seems to be a ridiculously hard major to be accepted into at State.

What are scores then if mine are low??

My S is an NCSU grad. ('09). When he applied his SAT was M 660/V 740

I was accepted OOS as a bio major with a 32 ACT (I’ve been accepted at Emory, so I will be withdrawing my application). They told me when I visited that their average ACT was a 27, and that’s not thinking about the fact that Biology is such a popular major.
