Chances after Deferral?

To sum things up, I was deferred on the Early-Decision date of December 14th. An admissions officer told me why I was deferred and not given a decision. My test scores were not up to par with the requirements that Florida State holds, which is a 1500 SAT (500CR, 500M, 500W). My Critical Reading score stood at a 490 for the SAT and I was given the "Deferred" status immediately (Yes I know, thats awfully low). However, after taking the SAT again I bumped that score up to a 500. The message below is what appears on my Application Status:

"We have reviewed your application for admission to The Florida State University and have decided to delay making a decision until March 14, 2012. We recommend that you provide the following:

Mid-year senior grades - Have your grades sent to Florida State as soon as they become available but no later than February 15.
New ACT or SAT results - Retake either test prior to March 2012 and request that the scores be sent to Florida State."

As March 14th approaches quicker than ever, I've been going a bit crazy on whether I even have a chance at getting accepted or not. I'm just curious what you all think my chances of acceptance are. How often are students even admitted after being deferred? Are the chances of acceptance slim after deferral? Also, have any of you been accepted after being deferred?

SAT: 500 CR, 570 M, 610 Writing, 1680 Total.
ACT: 24 Composite. 23 English, 25 Math, 20 Reading, 28 Science.
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.4
Weighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.6

I'm pretty sure my ACT cannot be considered due to my Reading sub-score being so low. However, I do know my SAT can be used. Also, my grades from the first semester of my Senior year were all A's. FSU is my top choice, followed by UCF. I have already been admitted into UCF, but truthfully I would much rather attend Florida State. So with that all being said, I would greatly appreciate it if you could chance me and give me any information about the deferral process or chances after being deferred. If you have any questions or need any other info regarding my High School stats, please let me know.

Thanks! And Go Noles!

Honestly, I doubt you would be accepted.

Your SAT scores do meet the minimum requirements, yes. However, just meeting the minimum requirements doesn’t mean anything. Overall, your ACT and SAT scores are pretty low, and your weighted and unweighted GPA being so close together suggests that you don’t take many classes that are Honors, AP/IB or Dual Enrollment, which hurts your academic rigor profile- which is one of the top things that FSU looks at.

I completely understand that simply meeting the minimum requirements doesn’t mean a thing. They are called minimum requirements after all! As for my class rigor, I’ve taken mainly honors classes throughout High School. However, I haven’t taken too many AP/Dual Enrollment classes (which may explain why the gap between my unweighted and weighted GPA are not too large).

All in all, I guess the only thing I can do is hope for the best? At this point I have the mentality that I will be denied, then I won’t get my hopes up and I won’t be let down if thats the case. I know that may sound crazy, but I can get quite hyped up about certain things! Like I said in my original post, I still have the option for UCF, but all in all I’d much rather attend FSU. Only time will tell I guess.

I appreciate the reply though! Thanks

I’d give you a 30-40 percent chance. You stats aren’t great, but they’re not that far off from some of the accepted profiles that I’ve seen here. You still have some chance, though. Is there still time to take the SAT again and really focus on improving the CR? FSU superscores, so even if you do worse on the others, just boosting the CR might help you considerably.

The last test dates that FSU will consider for admission are January for the SAT and February for the ACT, both of which have already passed the February ACT test was this past weekend). So he’s stuck with the test scores that he has.

To kind of help you gauge where you stand, I was deferred with a 2020 sat and 3.1 UW / 4.1 W gpa. The admissions committee was definitely tougher this year, and that was for priority deadline (I believe RD is more difficult). That being said, you are still in the ball game, just at a disadvantage. You are below the average SAT (around 1850) and GPA (around 3.7 as calculated by FSU) for fall; perhaps switch to summer would help if you haven’t already. Anyways, good luck and remember, if you don’t make the cut, UCF is a phenomenal school.

Sorry about not being clear in my original post. I originally applied for the Summer 2012 Term, not Fall.

did you get accepted
