I already posted a chance thread, but I got my real unweighted GPA from school this time.

UW GPA 3.57
Very hard courseload, I didn't take honors math until this year (AP calc) but other than that pretty much the hardest courses available.

SAT 740V/740M/780W
SAt 2s All around 700, math IC bio and US hist

ECs:
10 years of viola, private performing, etc (this is my big one)
4 years of newspaper, section editor
3 years of community service in Key Club
3 years of volunteer tutoring
3 years of volunteer tutoring for Foreign Language honor society
Some other random insignificant stuff

I'm a pretty good writer and I think my essay's solid, recs are probably pretty good as well.

No real great hooks, I'm bilingual and a first generation American, dual citizen, blahblahblah.

Applying early to CAS. Chances?

its hard to say..cornell no longer bears the title of 'easiest ivy to gain admission into,' considering the statistics of last year's class and the # of rejects/waitlisted folk. i would say 60/40 in your favor...but yeah your GPA is low. continue working hard your senior year incase thats a deferral. but honestly, everything else seems solid..I would admit you :]

gpa is not everything. i am in the same situation. im reading this from my cornell pamphlet right now:

"The personal part of the application- your essays and short answers- counts for a lot too."

"'Your extracurricular and work activities and your letters of recommendation also speak to your intellectual and personal qualities"

Basically no university wants a student body of 4.0's. if you are doing welll (which, you are) in a very challenging courseload, and you are involved and adamant about several extracurriculars, then i think you have a great shot. find something you love and run with it. find a teacher that will write you the world's best recommendation. the way i think about it is, if your application consisted of only one recommendation and essay, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY or who would you choose to tell these people what an awesome person you are.

as my friend at harvard told me about admissions, this is the one time in your life where it is definately alrite to be selfish.

i think you have a good shot. keep it up!

thanks.. i feel better. sending in my stuff today. good luck to everyone!

wow my GPA is lower than that..but dude my friend with a 1340/1600 and a 3.7 W got in last year

lots of stuff happens, I can't really feel confident just cuz of a lone example like that. I feel like you really have to have the right attitude/essays for Cornell. that probably ties into the reason I want to go there so badly, too.

well from the sounds of it, im sure you exemplified this desire in your essays etc.

at the end of they day, im sure they will be able to see that. :-)

good luck!

thanks bud.. I'm hoping for the best. the uncertainty is killin me :(

oh rhinoplasty, you really do sound sincere about wanting to get in. well i hope that you will get in, and they wont look at gpa too harsly. good luck, i'm rooting for you!

:) thanks a lot. I'm excited to see now that the application is out of my hands... unfortunately there are many other people in my HS applying to Cornell early, my best friend is applying to the Engineering school but a handful of other people are applying to CAS. Nervous O_O

Hey, this is a little off topic, but do multiple people from the same hs applying to DIFFERENT colleges at cornell affect each other? like will an engineering applicant make it harder for arts and sciences applicants at the same HS?

I dont know if this helps for statistics-wise, but in the class of 2006 from my school, 33 people applied and 10 were admitted. for the class of 2005, 24 applied and 10 were admitted. so it looks like Cornell will accept multiple applicants if your school is large and competitive
