Chances, aiming for Honors Fellowship Program

I'm looking at several colleges right now, with UNC Chapel Hill my top choice, Elon a secondary, and Deep Springs quite a reach.

I feel that I have a strong chance at getting into Elon, but in order to go, I would have to pull in a large amount of scholarship money -- something the Honors Fellowship Program would certainly offer.

Stats:
GPA (Weighted): 4.75
GPA (Unweighted): 3.9
SAT:
Critical Reading: 800
Writing: 750
Math: 640
Composite: 2190

I will have taken 9 AP courses by the time I graduate; with tests, I have so far:
APUSH: 5
AP Bio: 5
AP English Language: 5
AP US Gov/Pol: 4

Academic Recognition: Throughout my high school experience, I have enjoyed a rigorous schedule based around Honors and AP courses. This has led to recognition for excellence in English, Spanish, History, and I was the 2007 recipient of the Yale Book Club Award at my school, granted for outstanding character and a passion for learning. An essay I wrote over the summer was published in "Challenge The Experts" by Elder and Leemaur Publishers.

I am president of both National Honor Society and Beta Club at my school, work 40+ hours/week during the summer in retail, while lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons on the side, I am involved in a Civics Education committee that was highly selective, and have a number of other interests. My biggest weakness I feel is a lack of consistent volunteer projects -- I have done a fair amount of work at the Food Bank, various fund raising efforts, etc., though there is no single effort that stands out. Regardless, I feel I have a strong academic background, and that my essay may make up for that foible in the volunteer experience.

With aims to get into the Honors Fellowship Program, where do you think I stand? Also, do any students/ alumni of Elon have anything to say regarding an interest in Chapel Hill v. Elon? I would pursue something along the lines of Public Policy or Political Science, regardless of where I attended, and am determined to study abroad as much as I can.

Thanks.

Scuba,

An offer to the Elon Fellow's program would seem to me to be certainly likely. Interesting choice of options on your part. Deep Springs is fascinating, I suspect I'd want to go if I had the chance. UNC is a great school in a great town (we're from Chapel Hill). I think the reason someone might choose Elon instead of UNC is probably because it's likely to be more personal, with less distractions and perhaps a more supportative faculty. It's about the smaller size and the attention to undergraduates. My D is going to Elon with presidential scholarship. My wallet and Carolina spirit thought she might opt for UNC - It is a great school, but she wouldn't apply because she needs to leave town. Have you considered Davidson? I understand they're meeting demonstrated financial needs. The problem for the middle of the middle class is the word demonstrated. Another reason Elon is attractive, compared to most other private universities, if you can't quite meet the requirements of demonstrated need. It costs less. Good luck wherever.

The stats for Honors Fellows at Elon is 4.77 GPA and 1394/1600 SAT so I think that you will at least get an invite to Fellows weekend. Then it's up to you to nail the interview and writing exercise. Good luck!

Scuba,

I don't necessarily disagree with the previous post but I sense you'll very likely get everything Elon can offer if that's what you want. If it's for you, you're fortunate.

Good luck

I appreciate the words of encouragement that have been offered to me. I was up on campus at UNC-CH this past Thursday -- it's an awesome place, but I have to admit, the smaller classes offered by Elon are enticing as well.

Fortunately, I don't have to make my decision yet.

Thanks for the help.
