CHANCES? American Student

I know my stats are really low for a school like McGill, but I was wondering (please be brutally honest) what my chances are.

GPA/Classes
Sophomore:3.5
All Honors Classes, including French III Honors, w/99 on NY Regents Exam

Junior:3.4
All Honors Classes, AP English Lang (~95 average), AP American History, AP Physics B (very low average, possible failing final average (64)--will this kill me? I don't want to go into science, and it is the hardest class at my school... :( I think I got a 3 on the AP, though, small chance of 4, even.
Also, 99 on NY English Regents, if that means anything.

Senior: (I think a rise in GPA, I will be working less hours, my parents' extremely messy divorce will be over, etc. Not that those were really excuses, of course.)
AP English Literature
AP US Government
AP French
AP Statistics
Psychology/Sociology

SAT: 2080 (w/plans to retake--I had a migraine by the end of the test--IT IS WAY TOO LONG)
CR: 720
Math: 680
Writing: 680

On the PSAT I had a 2120 and received National Merit (I think that's top 10%? Not sure. I'm not sure if I'll go further in the contest with that score.)

SAT II:
Literature: 770
American History: 730
French: 690 (Will retake)

ECs: (Not sure if these will help at McGill.....)
French National Honor Society
Literary Magazine Editor
Poetry Club -- (poem was published in an Anthology of Young Americans)
Orchestra/Symphony Orchestra: Violin for 8 years, some viola
Worked on intensive filmmaking programs for two summers (big hobby)
Working full time this summer

Work:
Many hours a week at local library
A few hours every two weeks filming meetings at my school

I want to major in English Literature, possibly a minor in French? If not, a major in French. I'm not quite sure yet, but it's between those two.

Sorry this was so long, but I'm on edge, really... If anyone could PLEASE help me, that would be excellent... I want to know how realistic/unrealistic I'm being by applying.

Thank you.

too special for the class of 2010//chances thread? lol oh well, the problem with asking us is we have no clue, we just know our own scores, which are different from the SAT we took, and where you go to highschool I think matters. Still if you want to know your chances, check the site. I even went through the trouble of going to the site myself, cause I know how long it took me to navigate through all McGill's info. Here you are: http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/undergrad/requirements-specific/us/sat--scores/

thanks a lot. it seems i make the minimum, but i'm still not very confident.

heh, sorry about that, i only noticed the other thread after i had posted... :/

anyone have an opinion? please?

my counselor told me i had no hope- but hey!
are you planning on applying for a scholarship?

I think I will, just because, you never really know, right? But I still need to look more into different packages and stuff.

that will help coz at least they'll have your ECs in mind. also, i wrote "extenuating circumstances" essays for all my applications except McGill, and now it's refreshing to know they're the one school who wanted me even without knowing my baggage... all they saw was grades and that was good enough

Just curious, does McGill take transfer students?

yep, they take transfers. I got in as one. :D

alright, i'll definitely apply for scholarships then... thanks for the advice!

Marine1: I got into McGill with lower SATs and SAT IIs than you--680 M, 650V; 710 Writing, 620 Math IIC, and 570 Chem (no clue how that one happened). So yeah, I think you have a good shot at getting in.

Thanks so much for your response! I hope my gpa won't kill me. :)

http://www.mcgill.ca/counsellors/us-counsellors/

Read me.

thanks, but i know the minimums, i'm just sort of trying to get people's opinions of my chances. i've been afraid of my guidance counselor telling me "nooooo way", so i'm trying to be prepared. :/

anyway, thanks again

No one knows your chances, but if you are around (ie - you cannot tell bc of your grading system but it looks like you meet) or above the minimums and you really want to go - apply. No matter what some counsel says. I'd hate to not apply then find out someone with lower stats then me got in more then applying and getting rejected from my #1 school. I know I am applying with a GPA that will be around 3.0-3.4. Then again this is deceptive because of a poor freshmen year (long story) which McGill does not calculate according to their site. My chances aren't super great like some on here, but I know I stand a chance and I know I will work my hardest to get high marks this year in AP Calc and Chem.

thanks for your response, and good luck! :) i am definitely going to be working hard, too, this year. too great a school to not apply!

Yeah, I just wish they had Early Action or Early Decision a la american schools. I am going to be on edge right into spring/summer....that might be good though. If I can pull a 4.0 this year I reckon my chances will go up vs. if I applied with just my junior year not-all-that-much-above-mcgill's-minimum grades. Good luck to you also, and thanks.
