Chances Amherst, penn, georgetown, brown, dartmouth?

<p>white male
good northern NJ high school (20 or something on a ranking list?)</p>

<p>new SAT I's: 800CR 710M 760W= 2270
(i plan to take them again and hope to achieve >2300 with prepping)</p>

<p>haven't taken SAT II's</p>

<p>EC's (i'll list the ones i plan to participate in next year as having participated senior year, along with the leadership positions i have gotten for next year)</p>

<p>9-10 soccer (lost interest in the sport as i started getting into music/writing)
10-12 chamber singers, men's choir (VP of choir, tenor section leader)
10-12 school newspaper, ranked #1 in the country by some Quill & Scroll organization, probably ********, but still a high-quality paper (Opinion Editor this year, Editor-In-Chief next)
10-12 academic team (captain, won gold medal in music & other assorted medals)
11-12? mock trial (not sure if i will participate next year, defense lawyer this year)
10-12 school musical (i was a lead this year, probably next as well)
accepted into National Honor Society
National Merit commendation on PSATS
selected to be American Legion Boys State Delegate
guitar, 3 years?
accepted into All-State Chorus this year</p>

<p>only AP class i'm in this year is history, but AP chem is the only other one juniors takeat my school.... i should have a 5, judging on my practice tests</p>

<p>here's my weak point...
my class rank is approx. 14/205, that's not top 5%, and my weighted GPA is 4.2ish (calculating based on this year's grades so far, pretty definite)</p>

<p>however, i have had a fairly strong upward trend in grades... only thing below a B was a C in freshman year geometry, and i have A/A- in all my humanities classes.</p>

Honors World Civ
Choir
Phys Ed</p>

<p>now... am I deluding myself, or do I have a shot at these schools?
Georgetown- my father and uncle went for grad school, and aunt for undergrad, does that count as legacy?</p>

<p>Amherst is my #1 choice as of now, but I hear ED'ing has a minimal effect on your chances there...</p>

<p>Brown, UPenn, and Dartmouth are my other four loved schools. </p>

<p>care to take a crack at my chances? thanks much.</p>

<p>georgetown-damn, u got legacy man. Great chance. well above 75%. If this wasnt college admissions, i'd say you're way in.</p>

<p>it's just a multiple choice test based on clips they play you and questions about the composers, era, instruments, musical techniques... etc.</p>

<p>incidentally, our team won our division (II, i think) in the state last year with 5th place overall and 4th overall this year, hoping for a repeat or better the next... that makes a difference right?</p>

<p>can someone tell me a little bit about amherst? that's really my #1 choice right now, i'm considering ED'ing it... since i have an upward trend, should i wait so they can see my anticipated awesome senior year grades? thanks for your help</p>

<p>oh and my uncle does interviews in my area for georgetown... i assume he won't be interviewing me though heh.</p>

<p>I think you have an awesome shot everywhere, but theres really no need to retake SATs. I guess if you feel like going through with it again, then all the power to you, but I don't think it would help much, you have excellent scores already</p>

<p>If you take a look at the Georgetown forums, there are several people with 1500s who were denied admissions for the Fall semester. SATs are obviously not the sole factor, neither is GPA. You have a great chance, but never an in. It's all about expression, and how well you sell yourself.</p>

<p>And yes, you do have the legacy factor, so I'd suggest applying EA.</p>

<p>Also, Georgetown throws out the new Writing Score, so you still essentially have a 1510, according to their standards. Which, is great!</p>

<p>Have fun at Boys State. It's a great summer program.</p>

<p>I actually disagree, these schools are very similar. Brown, Penn, Dartmouth are the most social Ivies, and Brown/ Dartmouth are small, undergrad focused, etc. Dartmouth is exactly halfway between Penn/ Amherst in size, experience, etc.</p>

<p>well, my psat scores are much much higher then what you have needed to get in past years, so i just assumed.. i think i got the exact score that you needed to be a semi-finalist in the last year they released, maybe 2002? i guess assuming isnt good, but i thought it was a pretty safe bet that i would be commended at least.</p>

for example, my two favorites were penn and amherst- almost opposites, right?</p>

<p>well, i can appreciate penn's campus-inside-a-city thing, as it is very similar to harvard, where my brother attends school- but i also love the varied, clustered architecture of amherst, it's very unique. i also am enamored with with its funky, artsy, cool town. every school on my list is very undergrad-focused.</p>

<p>the same principle applies to all the other schools- i can appreciate their identities and see myself becoming a part of them, even if they are very different</p>

Note: I don't think Ivies like Math students, they prefer the english geniouses like you :)
