Chances and a question

<p>Hi,</p>

<p>I’m applying to BC. I’m unsure if should apply EA or RD. I’m not the best applicant, but I really do love the school. Do I have anything to lose by applying EA? Can you please chance me?</p>

<p>Just so you know, AP and IB classes are not allowed to be taken in my school before junior year. Nor are we allowed to take outside college classes.</p>

<p>I am not good at chances, so I’ll just respond to the question.</p>

<p>By applying early, you lose two things: 1) change to retake a test and report a higher score; 2) chance to show a stronger transcript.</p>

<p>If you don’t plan to retake, than your score won’t change. Then the question becomes whether you think you can ace your senior classes. If so, it might be better to wait and apply with a stronger transcript.</p>

<p>I have no clue what it is for most other schools. I have a friend who has a 92 in another school, but her GPA is a 3.8, so i’m not sure what the exact is. Colleges will get my grades, so they’ll know what it’s worth. Or to be more exact my GC said that my GPA equates to about a 91-93. I’m just putting down my best score so that I can get a better chance response. :)</p>

<p>I don’t plan on taking the SAT again, my grades could become better (I hope), so i’ll take into consideration that factor of the application.</p>

<p>One other thought is the ACT. Some students do much better on one test or the other.</p>

<p>BC doesn’t defer EA, so if you don’t get EA, you end your run there. So I agree with bluebayou: Try to get a little more boost in your senior year stats and go for RD. There is no statistical advantage to EA over RD at BC – aceptanace rates are about the same for both. (not true at other schools, but true at BC). And the ACT comment is spot on – your SAT combined is a bit low on the BC range.</p>

<p>One thing to know: BC doesn’t appear to toss applications aside after a first pass at just the numbers – I know people here who had one area in which they struggled in high school, but who had the wholistic package and BC admitted them, and they seem to do fine. Best of luck!</p>

<p>That is incorrect. In general, approximately 1/3rd of EA applicants are accepted, 1/3rd rejected and 1/3rd deferred to the RD round.</p>

<p>Well, at the very least I know that some people were below the 1910 mark. But I know that they probably had other things going for them. My essay is great, so are my recs, and my class schedule is as good as I could get it. </p>

<p>I don’t plan to take it again because I can’t take it again. The last chance I have to take the SAT i’ll be using it for the SATII</p>

<p>Dear BlackRose101 : International Baccalaureate coursework will not be weighted as being more aggressive or demanding than AP course work. If you are looking to validate your overall IB performance, you will be expected to demonstrate scores of 6 and 7 in most cases to show mastery of the subject areas in Boston College’s view. Some courses will accept a 5 as showing competence.</p>

<p>An 1800 is certainly bottom quartile at Boston College. Using jpm50’s data (public record), the midpoint SAT score is 2020 - which implies each quartile is divided by approximately 110 points. Therefore, the “zeroth” percentile is about 1910-110 = 1800. (This is not completely statistically sound, but close enough for now.)</p>

<p>At 3.54 (in most schools, a B+/A-), you do not figure to be in the top 10% which takes about 85% of the admission slots at Boston College.</p>

<p>The SAT/GPA scores do not add up to success in the EA round to my reading of your profile regardless of the other material offered.</p>

<p>I am unclear how you can have five years associated with some areas in your extra curriculars but have to assume that your high school is therefore either 7th or 8th grade through senior year. In reading this material, perhaps offering some insights in how your college level internship might have shaped your view and commitment to college might be an interesting and very unique aspect to your profile.</p>

<p>Whatever schools ends up having me will not get my score until the school year starts, that is the way IB works. I don’t want to get out of classes through my IB scores, I just want to be a normal freshman, and take normal freshmen classes. I would rather not be a sophomore in English, and then a freshman in math. </p>

<p>You are correct, I have 5 years of some activities because my school had middle school as a part of the high school (when I was still in middle school). When I got to 9th grade then 9-12 was in a new building all by itself. So that is why.</p>

<p>I actually am in the top portion of my graduating class. BC will get my rank as well…although it’s constantly changing.</p>

<p>i would say apply regular just because of the somewhat low test scores. Get your grades up to make up for them and youll look a lot better i think. your ec’s are looking good. definitely rd i think. good luck!</p>
