Chances and Condensing for Average Student

Many of these schools have athletic recruiting forms on their athletic websites. You can complete those easily and see what interest they draw. You might also consider directly emailing the coach with an
"allow me to introduce myself" letter highlighting your academic and athletic accomplishments. D3 coaches don't have huge recruiting budgets, so you do need to market yourself a bit. You can also ask them if they will look at a videotape and/or you could have your HS coach call them directly

Very good info.

Does anyone have any other match ideas? I like the areas of coastal southern states, DC area, and New England cities such as Boston and Providence.

Yeah, I don't know. Bump. (Not trying to seem impatiant)

ummm...UMBC...or Villanova maybe

Never thought about UMBC. Possibility.

Lets see.. Providence College? Fairfield? Lasalle U? Santa Clara? Seton Hall? Uconn? Franklin & Marshall? Furman? Loyola (MD)?

Lasalle is pretty bad. You can do better. UConn is great and very underrated. F&M is highly regarded as well.

MomofKnight - check out info on Amherst admission -- may be tough even for athletes with SATs below 1300

SATs of 1150 to 1240 not admissable since 2004
SATs of 1250-1300 admissable for highly desirable football & hockey
SATs of 1310-1350 Some minorities and athletes

Title: How to get into a school like Amherst
Here's the system the college used to rank the 6,300 students who applied for last fall's entering class of 431.

Business Week 2-27-2006

LaSalle actually ended up being my favorite out of the Philly Big 5 schools. However, I would just use it as a complete safety.

daffymom- thanks for the amherst admission info. I am retaking the SAT's but I haven't done too much research on the school yet, so I'm not sure if it would be a good fit or anything.

Um, Bump.

Just seeing if anyone else has some good advice to offer, it'd be really great.

KElly I think you have a great shot at UMD. I would say you are in and am surprised others have said it would be a reach. If you have any questions come on over to the UMD part of this site and we will all help. You can post up your stats and see what they all say. Over 20% of my class is going to UMD, including me, and I feel knowledgable on it. I think you'll get in there. OOS may be tougher but as long as your SATs are in line you are good. In the other thread someone had a 4.4 and a 1200 and did not get in, in state. Breaking 1250 is a big deal. Break 1300 and it is truly a match/safety. A 1350 would put you in contention for programs such as scholars and honors which carry small but helpful scholarships.

Forget about UMBC, you can get into better schools in the DC area and UMBC isn't exactly in the DC area. Baltimore is like 35 minutes from DC with no cheap public transportation available. American and GW are right there. DC would be amazing for someone wanting to do journalism. There are sport teams in both baltimore and DC, not to mention that it is the political capital of the world.

Because I am such a nice guy, here is a quick link over to the UMD part of this site http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/forumdisplay.php?f=278

Wow I must suck if thats average.

I think its closer to

2.8 GPA
18 ACT
Blow off classes starting junior year
No EC's

Cheapseats - Thats really good to hear, I'll come over.

Puppetzz- I feel average because I'm barely in the Top 25% of my class, in a not exactly competitive school.

Does anyone have an opinion on Providence College?

I don't want to steer you wrong so that is why I am writing this. I didn't see your rank before which is the only reason I don't think you are looking at more competitive schools. 38/102 is around the top 37%. That is a little low for UMD. Your 3.5 GPA is good so I am surprised that it corresponds to that rank. You said to puppetzz that you are barely top 25%. If your school uses Weighted Gpas to rank and you are top 25% I think you have a great shot but outside of that makes it much harder.

Here is the info on UMD:
53% in top 10th of graduating class
87% in top quarter of graduating class
99% in top half of graduating class

64% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
16% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
10% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
6% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
3% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
1% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49
87% are in the top quarter. That makes it very hard if you are outside of that and not a minority or instate.

I don't think those stats are too important. I know a kid in my class who was top 35%, 28 ACT, 3.6 GPA, and got in at Maryland. I don't think it will be too hard, don't go off those statistics, they are just guidelines.

is the 1270 from the old sat
if it's from the new, i would most definitely suggest taking it over

It's from the old. I plan to take the new one this fall, and with a whole summer to study, I'm sure that I can bring it up.

Um, I hope that I can phrase all of this right to make sense. I am #32 with unweighted grades. I can tell you that a girl who's taken, I believe, only a total of 4 honors classes in her high school career is #3. I think it's ridiculous. If the ranks were from weighted GPA's I would be more along the lines of the early to mid twenties. I can say that the official ranks seem to be the most unfair thing, and are really not working in my favor. Our school isn't known for being competitive, however without making excuses, my class had the most students taking honors/AP, so my class is in many peoples opinion "the most competitive class". All of that means nothing, though, because I'm sure colleges really don't care how competitive my class is.

Like I said about my brother being accepted to Maryland: He got in with very similar stats, except his official rank was 21/79. He did not attend, however.

Bump.

Hopefully I'm not too annoying or anything. Just looking for opinions.

what
pepperdine shouldnt be a big reach with ur gpa
maybe a little reach
but not big

You think? I don't know very much about Pepp admissions. Are they heavily GPA/Rank/SAT focussed?
