Chances and Question

I am an upcoming senior next year and I am trying to pick a college. The only two that I have been able to come up with are UT Austin and Rice. My GPA is around a 3.75 (not sure if thats weighted or unweighted) and I am 25 in a class of 550. I am from Dallas.

I just got back from a foreign exchange to an agricultural community in Chile through the Rotary Student Ambassador Scholarship Program. I am a member of my schools varsity swim team ... since freshman year in which I lettered in the 500 free (soph).

Anyways, I think my stats seem fine. But my question is, how are the social sciences programs at UT. My brother (Zack Hall) is currently at UT and he is not very helpful at all. I am looking into studying Linguistics, Spanish, Anthropology, Latin American Studies, something around there...although I am not exactly sure yet.

What is big at UT? I hear the business school is difficult to get into. What else?

You are an automatic entrant into UT due to the 10% policy.

Nick,

I suggest you consider the liberal arts honors programs at UT, such as Plan II Honors (http://www.utexas.edu/cola/progs/plan2/). I think Plan II likes students with your interests and has much to offer them. Plan II does care about SATs, so you need to look at the Plan II website to decide whether your numbers match up.

You might also consider UT's liberal arts honors program (http://www.utexas.edu/cola/progs/lahonors/?path%5B0%5D=lahonors), which includes the freshman honors program (http://www.utexas.edu/cola/progs/lahonors/programs/freshman/). Browse these websites and see if something appeals to you.

Here's a link that explains how to apply to various honors programs at UT: http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/freshmen/honors/. You also have to separately apply to UT but you should automatically be admitted under the top-10% rule as BakTalk mentioned.

UT has more professors and course offerings than Rice in the areas you mentioned, but Rice is obviously an excellent college. Another thing to consider is whether or not you want to go to school with your brother. I've known several brothers and sisters who attended UT, pursued very different interests, and basically never saw each other. However, sometimes it's nice to go where you know someone. It can also give you an added bond with your brother that will last a lifetime.

Good luck and best wishes for a great senior year.

im actually not sure about top 10 percent. it depends on how well my classmates did while i was abroad. so i guess that is why im basically asking this.

It's impossible to know your shot without your rank, the by far most important factor in UT's admissions.
