Chances....and scholarships

White Male, Madison, NC

I attend the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. For those of you who don't know what that is, it is one of, if not the best, high school in NC. You can go to their website at www.ncssm.edu to know more about it. Basically, you apply there and they admit a certain number of people based on where you're from and what kind of school you went to. Anyways, on to my stats:

SAT I 1270/1600 (1800ish out of 2400)
SAT II : Math II 640

My work load is hard to compare because we operate on trimesters instead of semesters. We have to have 5 courses each trimester, although some last longer than one trimester. I haven't taken any advanced classes except for one this year (I'm a senior) because advanced classes are really difficult here. I will be taking 2 AP courses (I know that's not a lot), but my grades have been decent IMO. I've made pretty much straight Bs with a few As. Here are some classes:

MA355 Precal w/ Adv. topics
SS364 Intro. to psychology
BI364 Embryology
SP354 Adv. Spanish
SS354 Micro Economics
BI358 Classical Genetics
CSC302 Intro. to Procedural Programming
EN438 Western Economic and Cultural Studies
SS410 AP Psychology
MA372 Exploration of Advanced Geometry
CSC402 AP Intermediate Programming
PH310 Applied Electronics

As far as ECs:

Varsity Basketball, Tennis, Cross Country (Bball 11-12, Tennis 9-10, XC 10)
Marching Band (9-10)
Wind Ensemble (10)
Life Scout in Boy Scouts
Class V.P (9)
Class President (10)
ranked 1st (9)
ranked 3rd (10)

For NCSSM, we have to do 3 hours of work service a week (with the school), plus housekeeping on our hall, and are required to do 60 hrs of community work service; I did 120+ at a camp for the disabled.

NCSSM doesn't rank us, nor do they give us our GPAs. I know it's kind of hard to describe my situation, but if you have any questions ask.

Sorry if this was confusing. I want to know my chances and of getting a scholarship that is for students where I live (Madison). If I left anything out or it was too confusing, let me know and I'll try again.

Thanks!

I think you have a shot, but it will definetly be somewhat of a reach for you because of your SATs. That they don't give GPAs/ranks is good, because it is quite a difficult school and it would not do any of the students justice. I don't like to quantify your chances, but it could go either way. I don't know how competitive your area is for scholarships, but in general I think it is unlikely unless your area does not have a lot of scholarship applicants or unless your essays were stellar. So pretty much you have a shot, but your SAT's will hinder you somewhat. Good luck!

I took that SAT again in December, not sure what I got yet. I'll put it up again if it's better. About the competitivness of my area, are you talking about for the scholarship specifically for my hometown? That would be pretty small. I'm the only one from my town that attends NCSSM and is applying to WFU, so I kinda thought I'd have a good shot. My mom also works with someone who was from our hometown and got a 1270/1600 on the SAT and got a full ride to WFU on that scholarship. But I really don't know, because anything could happen.

Thanks though!

Yeah, as I said before I don't know a lot about locale specific scholarships, and as you live there and know about how many kids apply from your area. More kids = more competition for you. Non-locale scholarships are pretty hard to get, but you have a great shot then if not many applied.

anyone else?

Roy, I believe merit scholarships are very difficult to obtain. My son had higher than the 1270 you mentioned and received nothing in the way of merit money. However, another student from our area in NC received a scholarship with lower gpa and SAT, but qualified on financial need basis.

That's what I thought might help; the financial need part. The scholarship I mentioned is a competitive need-based scholarship, with prefrence to residents of my town. I know that scholarships will be very difficult to obtain, esp. cause of my low score. I hope that the SAT I took in Dec. is higher, but it will still be difficult.

Thanks

So, my SAT didn't increase unfortunately. Has anyone had a low SAT score and got in and received a scholarship?

Thanks

U asked about chances........and scholarships--well, about chances just suppose that u r in! As for scholarships I'm not so sure!
