Chances and Suggestions for International?

Hey guys, I'm from India and I've just begun to look into the colleges I want to apply to. Could you please chance me on some colleges I'm considering and suggest some colleges ranked as safety/ match/ reach? I don't have a very clear idea about selectivities for different colleges (except for the Ivies of course and that's why they're the only ones I've thought about). My record is as following. I've just started Grade 12 and I plan on doing a lot more this year.

ACADEMIC RECORD:

I have taken the most demanding course my school offers, although it doesn't offer any APs. We do not have GPAs here but percentages, which after combining (from grade 9 to 11) comes out to be 89%. I don't clearly know how to convert this to GPA but it amounts to 4.00 according to this site GPA Conversion Part 2 | Admission Sync
I think I rank in the top 5 out of the 130 students who have comparable courses.

Sat Reasoning
Got a 2310 on my first attempt this June (CR-760, M-800, W-750)

I'll be giving my Sat subjects (Math, Physics, Chem) in October and November this year.

SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENTS:

Grade 9
Excellence in Academics
National Cyber Olympiad- All India Rank 57, Rank in state-6, Rank in school-1
Won a scholarship by Army Welfare education Society
Won an Interschool Quiz competition

Grade 10
Excellence in Academics
Proficiency Award in Science and Technology
Manavsthali Mathematics Talent Search- Silver Medal

Grade11
Excellence in Academics
Proficiency Award in Chemistry
Selected for Pre-medical internship by Apollo Hospitals

EXTRA CURRICULARS:

Clubs
Interact (Community service) - Grade 11
Bizzonomy (Business Studies and Economics)- Grade 11
Greenleaves (Environment)- Grade 12, Co-founder and Coordinator
InQuizitive (Quizzing)- Grade 11 and 12 (Prospective president :D)

Environmental Volunteering

Gave a presentation in the Delhi Secretariat on Earth Day (Grade 12)
Participant, Delhi youth Summit on Climate (Grade 12)
Member of Indian Youth Climate Network and International Panel for Sustainable Development, ECI
Starting a Climate Campaign that will work with different schools of the city
(I'm a lot into environmental activities and this is what I'm the most passionate about. I've had acute stage fright since 8th grade but my desire to talk to people about this made me work really hard to overcome it :))

Sports
On the Girls soccer team of the school (Grade 11 and 12)
Won an interschool soccer tournament (Grade 11)

Art
Won a district level poster designing competition (Grade 9)
Won a bookmark designing competition (Grade 11)

I'm on the editorial board for the School Magazine and Yearbook as the Art editor

Interests
Learning Jazz dance form
Learning how to play the guitar

I have quite a bit of volunteer work and a summer of work experience.

I really don't have much idea about colleges except the Ivies. Can you guys please chance me on the Ivies, MIT (that's my dream school), UCs, Caltech and suggest some other colleges? Also, do I need any more/ any other ECs for a well rounded record? It seems like quite a bit, but I'm not looking for ego inflation. Just a honest opinion. Maybe I'm just paranoid, or ill-informed, or both. Thanks a lot! :)

Help me guys! I'm getting anxious!

isnt shubham a guys name??? then how are u on the Girls Soccer team?? man i wish i was on the girls soccer team. :P

PS: i dont think 89% is equivalent to a 4.0 and, since ur from India, most ppl will judge your academics based on your Board exam results. Also what are you looking to do in College? and what kind of personality do you want your college to have?

wow, lol.
hmm, let me check out that link.

Hey, I have a question. Since we don't have GPA in India, should we leave that section blank in the form? Or convert from such tables to GPA?

and see the GPA table on this link too (and there are more too, like on one wiki)

India

BTW @poster of thread - You have a good shot. Your essays and interview could decide too.

@ sidfromaus

Yes, Shubham's a guy's name. Although no I'm not a guy. Being a girl I have full right to be on the girl's soccer team, and trust me you wouldn' really want to be on it. Btw don't wonder why I'm named that way, my parents probably were delusional or something at the critical hour of namekeeping.
I wasn't sure either so I just said what that site did. I'm still pretty skeptical about the gpa conversion. My board results wouldn't be out till may next year while the decisions would be notified long before...in March-April right? I don't see how they could possibly consider my board scores. Although my grade 10 boards were okay...a 92.8%

@ spideyunlimited

I really don't know about the gpa, but I'll have to check up with my ed counsellor. I guess if it's ambiguous we'd better leave it as percentages in case the colleges end up feeling we cheated them or something :D
I write decently well so I'm sure my essays wouldn't be a problem. If only I could decide what colleges I should apply to! If I apply to all Ivies, MIT, Caltech etc it'd be like mostly reaches for me and that's not exactly realistic is it?

Yep!
Same thing here. Besides that, your board score is fine. Anything above 80% means you're qualified.

Well, important question... will you ask for financial aid? Because that would change the perspective with regard to Stanford, Caltech and others...
Only 8 univs are fully need blind and meet full need.

Don't apply to all ivies. MIT and Caltech are almost equal in standard...so realistically speaking, all your schools are ivy-standard. then you'd have no matches or safeties ;)

Try 3 from HYPS, MIT, Caltech. (high reaches for everyone)

Then you could try 4 of: Rennesayler (SP??) Polytechnic Institue, University of Rochester, UIUC, NYU, UCSD as matches/high matches

And perhaps safeties: purdue? i can't really think of any good safeties off the top of my head..

anyways, jsut my two cents. my opinion is probably not that valid so yeah haha...but overall i'd suggest 3 reach 4 match 2 safety

@spideyunlimited
financial aid is the crux out here ;)

@20091990
I'm applying to MIT for sure. Most probably all the Ivies. I'll look up the matches you suggested...and Purdue I'm pretty sure about too...any more suggestions? about ecs and stuff?

lol, for internationals, financial aid is the real thing :

@20091990

she requires financial aid too, and as a international student at that.

Rennesayler Polytechnic Institue, University of Rochester, UIUC, NYU, UCSD, purdue offer little or no financial aid for international students.

Hmm...just need-blind colleges is what I'd be able to afford. Even UT Austin has limited Fin Aid for international applicants. Plus the whole "prove your funds sufficient for a year and then we'll see" story. Not very helpful.

If you need financial aid, look into Liberal Art Colleges.

This thread is kind of digressing. Chance me for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT (!), UPenn, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Carnegie Mellon, UT Austin, Purdue, Harvey Mudd, Swarthmore, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Please? PLEASE? please tell me you will! :D sorry couldn't resist.

bumpity bump

Is bumping again allowed? Well, I hope I soon find out, along with other stuff i wanted to know in this thread :D

I think you have a good chance at UIUC and Purdue and a decent shot and the Ivies and schools of that caliber. You are well rounded, which every school loves to see! Your test scores are good too! Good luck! :)

Thanks :) Anybody has any suggestions for the ECs, please?

You have a good shot at MIT. But, as usual it's all about luck. Hope you get in though! By the way, if you what do you want to do concerning the environment? Such as what kind of profession? I don't think MIT is the best school for students interested in environmental science. Unless you want to be an engineer then MIT is definitely the best school for you XD - Good Luck!
