Hi, I'm a junior at a public school in western NY (Rochester) and I visited UVA two days ago at my aunt's suggestion. I had never considered UVA, but after visiting, I am in love with the school. It seems like it's perfect in every way. Romanticizing aside, I would like to know if I have a realistic shot at getting in. My academics could be better, but I am also very involved in extracurriculars.

I took the PSAT and did well in comparison to some of my friends, but definitely not by own own standards. The scores would predict a 710 critical reading, 590 in math, and a 590 in writing as well. These scores will hopefully be drastically better when I take the SAT in March.

My class rank at the last issuance of rankings put me in the top 11 percent of my class and I have taken/am taking/will take the following APs: World History- (received a 4), US History, Language and Composition, Physics BC, Government, Bio, Literature, and Calc BC although that may be switched to statistics.
My GPA is like a 3.7, but my school has an extremely weird GPA scale and I'm pretty sure that figure is wrong.

Extracurriculars and clubs:

National Honor Society Member
French Honor Society secretary
Class secretary
Varsity swim team
Member of Leadership Council and Principals Advisory Committee, which are both organizations that bring together students that have been hand-picked by administrators to try to improve the school
Sole student representative on the district-wide Safety Committee and the Code of Conduct sub-committee
Part time job teaching kids to swim and lifeguarding
Editor of school newspaper

Is UVA a realistic choice for me? I also visited University of Richmond, which seems like a good fit. Any and all suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Your chances are low, and this is mainly due to the fact that you are OOS. Getting a great score on your SAT (>2100) will definitely help your chances. Also, try to get a majority of As for all of your classes that you’re taking this year. Somebody told me that UVA is thinking of doing early action next year, so this may be something to look into. I’m not exactly if applying earyl will help or hurt your chances, maybe someone else knows more about that. Goodluck!

^@Dean J, I’ve heard of those admissions info events with Harvard, Princeton, and UVA. those three always seem to be together. Did all three of these schools decide to switch to EA together, or is it just a coincidence.

@OP, get all A’s this year to get in toop 10% of your class. Agreed, as an OOS applicant you need a high SAT score to be competitive. Even higher if your gpa isn’t the best. Your EC’s are good enough, but you need the academics first. Try the ACt if the SAT doesn’t work out, even if it does, you might do better on the ACT. And don’t forget, UVA strongly recommends SAT II’s, so you should take them.

@Tomato: I think they are together. I found this website 2 years ago when I was looking for information about UVA. I registered and received emails about admission to these schools.

We didn’t decide to switch as a group. I know we notified the deans at Harvard and Princeton before we made our announcement, so they would be prepared. I think many expected their announcements with or without UVa making a move to EA.
