Chances? (And what am I thinking?!)

First time doing this so I'll provide as much information as I can.

ACT: 32
SAT: 1780 (it's bad, I know. Not planning on sending it to colleges if they don't need it)

RANK: 8/286--top 3%
GPA (weighted): 4.8/5.0
I've aced all of my classes since freshman year except PE.

By the end of senior year I'll have taken 5 AP courses:
AP Lang. and Composition
AP Literature and Composition
AP US Government
AP Comparative US Government
AP Biology
(No math! Though all math courses I took were/are honors)
Actually, most of my classes are honors so there's that

EC'S:
Foreign Language Club (4 years, officer position)
Science Club (2 years, president)
Debate Team (1 year, founding member)
Scholastic Bowl (2 years)

I volunteer at the local library but other than that no crazy inspirational stories
I write very, very well and am in the process of hopefully writing some kick-ass essays

On to the colleges:

UT Austin
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Boston University
U Penn
Columbia University
Cornell University
Northwestern University
Rice University
UC Boulder
and Stanford for some stupid reason

Honestly, what are my chances? I know I'm applying to way waayyyyy too many reach schools, and I'm desperately trying to find better matches/safety schools but they all seem so unappealing. Help.

Bump- need advice please

Bump
I guess I shouldn’t expect replies at one in the morning…

I don’t know about those other colleges but you are in UT Austin, no exception.

UPenn, Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern, Rice, and Stanford are all pretty high reaches since I don’t see anything that jumps out as really impressive. BUT, you still have a shot. Your stats are pretty good, and if your essays stand out your chances could be decent.

Your chances are solid at UTA, UIUC, BU, and Boulder. :)

I agree that you should throw in a few more matches and safeties, and maybe try to trim down the reaches. Best of luck finding some that are appealing to you.

Thanks for the advice! I know I’m applying to too many reaches… I mostly put them on my list because they had what I wanted and I knew they were good schools. I’ll definitely trim them down. Maybe more than I initially thought I would.

@astarisborn94
Well that’s a relief since I’m seriously considering going there if I’m accepted. Thanks. :)

You are definitely in UT Austin but maybe add another safety school.
Boston University is a good match.
U Penn, Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern, Rice, and Stanford are all reaches (especially Stanford). I say you cut down on the amount of reaches since you really don’t need this many and only apply to the ones you want to go to the most.
What are you majoring in?

I think that you guys are being really stupid in saying he’s ‘In’ at UT Austin. That would be the case if he’s a Texas resident, but nobody here knows. If he isn’t a Texas resident, UT Austin is a low reach. You can’t use the CollegeBoard’s SAT score range numbers to chance him for UT Austin, because those numbers include Texas residents who were automatically admitted.

Couldn’t he use his ACT instead? I think UT Austin requires either ACT or SAT, so he doesn’t have to submit his SAT if he doesn’t want to.

I never said there was anything wrong with him only submitting his ACT. I said you can’t use the ACT score range published, because it includes automatically admitted Texas residents.

For out of state students, Texas is very competitive. Do yourself a favor and don’t consider it a safety.

Whoa, didn’t notice that I had more responses.
I’m not a texas resident, unfortunately. UT Austin was never a safety for me, I considered it more of a match… if it’s a low reach that’s alright. I’m just really hoping I get in because I’m planning on majoring in geology/geosciences and I know UT’s geoscience school is among the best.
Also, I will definitely be eliminating more if not most of the reach schools I have down, if only for practicality’s sake. I was being a bit too ambitious…

But nonetheless, your ACT of 32 is high. Your ECs are lacking, but I think that if you write good essays, you’ll get in. And I think you’re fine for the school of Geo Science. I know a guy who went to the Jackson school of Geo Science last year and he loves it.

Good luck man.
