I plan on visiting Emory sometime this summer. My dad lives in ATL, so I will when I drop by for a visit.

So could anyone predict my chances at a scholarship (at least half)? And how many total does Emory give out each year?

I'd say that you have a pretty good shot at getting a scholarship from the emory scholars program. it is a very competitive program to get into so no one is a lock for it but i think you are in good shape. there are about 350 semifinalists and then around 150 finalists. to find out more about emory scholars go to this website <a href="http://college.emory.edu/current/achievement/scholars/prospective.html%5B/url%5D">http://college.emory.edu/current/achievement/scholars/prospective.html</a></p>

My Stats were similar to yours. I had less athletics but lots more volunteering. I am the Val. SAT's Math 740; Verbal 800; CR 800. Great scores on State exams, lots of academic achievements. I applied to Emory was a semi-finalist for the Emory Scholars. They gave me a 10K liberal arts scholarship. I was wondering if my financial picture (FAFSA and CSS profile) entered the picure. If you have alot of financial need hopefully you will get more aid. My need was not that much so I think that's why I was not a finalist.

BTW, I decided not to go to Emory in the end. Good Luck.

My neice also was offered something like $14,000 - she had outstanding stats too. It wasn't enough money to take the offer and attend Emory. She ended up taking a full ride to UGA instead. I looked at her "resume" to see if I could tell why she didn't get one of the better scholarships. In my opinion, it was because there wasn't any clear "focus" of activities and involvement. In other words she had outstanding grades, SATs, great club involvement, achievements and awards, social service but she lacked a passion in a particular area. When you look at the resume, its a laundry list of great achievements but nothing stands out that says, "this kid has the potential to be a world famous muscian...or author...or researcher....or whatever."

Do you understand what I mean? This isn't to say that if she did have that quality she would have been offered more money, but I do think that that is what sets the finalists off from the rest. Just my two cents and it's worth about that.

thanks for the replies. now when u guys say they were offered 10k/14k, is that once, or for every year?

When I toured Emory I was told in the information session that the average GPA of the approx. 70 kids invited for the Emory Scholars interviews (all get either full tuition or tuition plus room and board for all 4 yrs) was a 3.9 uw and the average M/V SAT was right around 1500. In addition to those kids however, 100 or so get great scholarships as well.

My D ended up with a great scholarship but I think it's impossible to say what exactly the committee was looking for. My D said that it was a pretty divierse group of kids for the finalist weekend so I don't think there is any magic formula that gets you to finalist status.

With your stats, you should definitely pursue the scholars process -- you have an excellent shot, just keep in mind it is very competitive. It is a great program and many students turn down other top U's to paticipate in it.

My S has decent stats....4.6(w), 1450/2230, 15 of 575, good ECs... interested in business. Is it worth applying to Emory ? ( heard good things about the school from some alumni ). Thanks. J

Scholarships are renewable foe 4 years if you meet the University's guidelines for renewal. I would suggust all who are interested apply to Emory, and apply by the Nov Emory Scholars due date, including the forms/essay for the scholars program. They told me I was one of 350 semifinalists out of an applicant pool of about 2,500 applicants. So it's pretty competitive.

Even though I was an Emory Scholars semifinalist and got 10K (Liberal Arts Scholarship), Emory with the financial aid letter also included an additional 4K grant. I think Emory, while expensive like schools with it's national ranking is very generous. They also have the Emory Advantage program offering lower cost loans if your family meets the income guidelines. Under 50K for one program, under 100K for another.

By the way I did chose to accept somewhere else and will not be going to Emory. It was a hard decision to make. I felt Emory was very good to me.

Good Luck all.

what does the scholarship program put the most emphasis on? like I know Duke focuses on community service and such

Would you like us to write it for you? Get a grip. If you are as good a student as you seem, you should be able to write a short essay. If not, start applying to your local State U.

I was at scholars weekend, and most of the kids there were in the 1520-1600 range. I think you will be named a semifinalist and probably a finalist as well.

It's a crapshoot...there are kids with higher numbers than yours and stellar recs/national ECs who expressed lots of love to Emory who don't even get to the semifinalist level. Go figure.
