Chances at Amherst College

Hey guys, Im from the nutmeg or constitution state: Connecticut woo!!
Academic Information: 3.49 unweighted gpa, My school does not do class rank. I am in the IB program. I am a full IB diploma candidate.
Standardized test info: I'm predicting my oct sats will be in the 1850-2100 range. I took the SAT the first time in June and I got a 1650. I studied a lot for the october one, so hopefully the score I get is in that range I predicted. Im also planning to take the SAT 2's for biology, literature and chinese with listening in November.
Classes this year: IB Biology HL 2, IB English HL 2, IB 20th Century HL, IB Chinese 4 SL, IB Business and Management SL 2, Theory of Knowledge SL 2, and Math Studies 2 SL. Before my junior year, I was taking all honors classes my soph and fresh year. The IB program begins your junior year.
Race/Ethnicity: African American and Ghanaian
Gender: Male
EC's: National Honor Society (2 years) - Chairman of Citizenship committee. I coordinate all the events that are dedicated to helping teachers in my school the whole year. This year, I am going to plan a gift wrapping event for my teachers.
Model United Nations (3 years): Active member in the Economics committee.
Track- 2 years
Events I have volunteered at:
A 5K for the Hartford Marathon Foundation. I plan to volunteer at the Hartford Marathon this weekend.
Special Olympics of Connecticut. I helped people do shotput.
CROP Walk- It is a walk for hunger.
Garden Clean up for an organization that helps the homeless get food.
Volunteer Project I started this year: I noticed the town that I go to school did not allocate enough money for their parks & rec department for summer programs. I was snooping around my school district's website and I jumped on this link to the town's website. It had the budget as the top link or something. I was curious and found out that the town did not give that much money to the parks & rec department. I organized a drive to get sport and art&crafts items. I made it a school spirit event and it was a big success. I got a lot of sport and art&crafts items for the town. I don't live in the town I go to school at since its a magnet school. I felt deep a connection in the community in my school that I felt compelled help the town the school was in.
Awards: I got the highest community service award that my school gives this year. It is called the CAS award.
Lake Delaware Boys Camp: I was not a counselor yet since you have to be in college for one year to do that. Since it was my last year at this camp, I was the leader of a tent this year. I was in charge of boys who were as old as 15 years old and as young as 8 years old. I helped the young boys that were homesick see that camp was their second meeting. I initiated tent meetings to address issues in the tent. I liked seeing each boy grow day one of the camp season till to the last day of the camp season.

bump…

crapshoot. your e.c.s are good but you need a 2200 at least I am pretty sure for Amherst. Also a 3.49 is very low even unweighted. Never hurts to try though

What’s your major?
also, you better have better scores in October one if you do Early decision? Action??
Beacus 1650 is dangersouly lower than avg. Also, 3.49 is really low even unweighted.
My tip is this:

  1. if you are in extenuating circumstances, then explain it without being whiny in CA additional or in your essay.
  2. If your SAT didn’t approve a lot, do following things:
    -Write essay everyday
-read SAT passage everyday with timing
-do practice test at least one per day
-Study Vocab using Word Smart Princetone
Nothing related to College is worthless to do, but you definitely needs work.

Good luck!
PM me if you have q or just leave q s here
