chances at an Ivy with high grades & low SAT's?

one of my friends has a 3.9 GPA unweighted. however, her SAT's are quite low, 1150. the problem is that she is only applying to Ivies: Colombia is her top choice. i encouraged her to apply to some safety schools but she will not listen. i am concerned for her because i think she is setting herself up for failure. i think her low SAT score will prevent her from getting into any of Ivies. what do you all think? is there anything else i can do to convice her to apply to more reasonable schools? i already gave her some brocures on Vanderbilt and Northwestern, which may still be reaches, but if she insists on a top school, she probably has a better chance there than at an Ivy. it didn't work though because she said that she is still only applying to 4 or 5 Ivies and that's it. Oh well. i'll make sure to visit her at community college next year.

oh- forgot to add- she has decent EC's and she's the president of 2 clubs.

First of all, can we establish that this is you? ENOUGH with the "my friend" things!

Well, I am also applying to a lot of Ivies and my SATs aren't really that great either. How many APs is she (you) in? I'd like to say she has a shot, but really for one to be really low the other has to be extreme- like a 4.5 GPA 1100 SAT or 3.2 GPA 1500 SAT. And still, people with 4.0s and 1500s combined don't get in. It all depends. However, I disagree with the "let's apply to all Ivies and I'll probably get lucky at one of them-" true, you might, but yeah definitely needs some safeties.

I have one safety, rest are top-notch. One is sufficient- as long as you're happy with it and know 100% you can get in. Then, you can focus on others. Tell her she can apply to all 8 Ivies if she wants- but at least one safety is CRUCIAL!

Hope that helps!

Why would she ask about how to convince her friend to apply to safeties if she wasnt really talking about her friend?...and why would she lie anyway? its not like she even knows us! lol i believe u nycX!
Yea but anyways...definitely do everything you can to convince your friend. Her SAT is very very low for ivies...and even people who are amazingly qualified still need safeties since its all such chance. People with perfect everything dont get into a lot of the ivies...she most definitely needs a back up.

haha no, it's not me. it really IS my friend. besides, there's no need to disguise youself by saying "my friend" when you're on-line and you're already anonymous lol. i already did a post regarding my own chances at the schools i'm applying to: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=10394
OK, thanks, that's settled.

i believe she is in 4 AP's this year: AP Spanish, AP Calculus BC, AP English, and AP Biology. and she took AP US History last year i think.

should i be blunt with her and be like, "listen, the truth is that you're probably not going to get into an Ivy with your SAT score. you need safeties!" rather then before, where i was like, "maybe you should check out this college just in case..."? i dunno, i feel so bad.

u dont hav 2 b that blunt. Just say that even though she could get in (you could even say probably if you want 2 b nice), she should have safeties JUST IN CASE. Because so many qualified people apply to the ivies that you never know.
