Chances at Andover Exeter

Hi all,

I’m an 8th grader living in the United States, and am applying to Phillips Academy Andover and Phillips Exeter.

SSAT: 92 on reading, 98 on verbal, 99 on math

A’s except one B from health class two years ago

Speech and Debate:
CHS 1st Parliamentary Debate; LOJ Hon. Mention Public Forum Debate; LOJ 2nd Parliamentary; CHS 2nd Parliamentary (BTW the tournaments are the same but from different years)

Founder + Editor in Chief of school magazine

Founding Member + Officer of a nonprofit that hosts speech and debate workshops + tournaments (there’s almost no other debate presence in my state)

Soccer 9 years

Writing: Scholastic Gold Key + Honorable Mention

Math:
2017 AMC 10: 91.5; 2016 AMC 8: 19; MathCon Bronze, Some Math Kangaroo stuff

History Bowl – semifinals JV in regionals comp.

I was also my school’s student of the month twice, if that means anything

I’m also applying for financial aid, which might lower my chances. Also, my essays are not perfect, as I did them pretty last minute. What are my chances?

I would greatly appreciate any responses

BTW, I’m Asian American – not sure if that will affect my chances

Why did you do your essays last second? You have more than 15 days???

Very slim chance: You need to apply to other schools.

The essays for PA is not due until February, so why did you do it last minute? And also, which part of the US do you live in? Admissions also look at geographic diversity.

Thanks, I will @Center

I live in Oregon @Phoenix777
I still have many days to complete the essays but I won’t be able to work on them very much because I’ll be out of town. I think I’ll have enough time for Andover, though.

I know how competitive Andover and Exeter are now , anyway, OP has a great chance.

tbh I personally think ur a wonderful applicant XD good luck!

If you are ORM (Asian) and don’t have a hook like recruited athlete, legacy, geodiversity (are you from North Dakota?), its going to be difficult. Let us know where you land. Good Luck! You have outstanding qualifications, but unfortunately smart kids are a dime a dozen.

Don’t be nervous and enjoy your challenges!
Your works, which proved you are smart, will be well appreciated.

For math, do your works and run for AIME. Summer math camps might help you to reach this goal.
For writing, you need to find a decent summer writing program. As a 9th grader, you may apply for UVA writing camp.

I guess you knew these already. Good luck!

My best guess is that you will be admitted to one & waitlisted at the other.

You are a great candidate because your SSAT is outstanding, 9 years of soccer, editor in chief of a publication & you offer the geographic diversity of Oregon. Debate is also impressive.

@knowmore qualifying for the AIME now won’t help his application (although it’s a great achievement). Applications are already submitted

@babymalcolm yep. last two lines are irrelevant to the bs applications. they were added as routine references for further challenges. ^.^
