Chances at Berkeley..Gone?

Hey folks,

Just wondering if I just tossed out my chance of getting into UCB's Haas program. My GPA went down from a 3.8 to 3.7 this quarter...not good.

But, on the positive side - I managed to get a 3.6 while working 2 jobs and taking very difficult courses.

Do you think that the adcoms would view my situation in a positive way?

Thanks in advance

What do you mean "difficult classes"? Everyone applying to Haas should be taking the EXACT classes listed on assist.org (breadths don't matter--you just need to fulfil them.) I am assuming you're comming from a ccc.

People on this forum have said perpetually that you need a 3.7 or higher to be even considered.

I'm applying to haas next year. Keep working hard, man.

Ah yes, sorry for not explaining myself.
I'm currently an Econ/Stats double major at UCD. I fulfilled all of Haas' requirements my first year and got all A's for every single prereq/breadth related course. The reason why my GPA isn't stellar is due to classes such as Vector Analysis, Econometrics, Regression Analysis, Advanced Calculus ... I tend to get B's or A-'s in these courses.

Having said this, I just thought of another question. Do the adcoms at Haas place an emphasis on your entire GPA or do they look to see how well you do in the prereqs?

I believe they look at both.

Blurry, don't feel bad I'm in the same boat as you and I maybe in a way worse condition than you. I'm a broader line student for HAAS with a 3.6 GPA I've been managing my parents business for over 5 years and I have other extra curricular activities. Berkeley & HAAS looks over everything and they mostly choose students that are well rounded. Students with 4.0 often don't get in because they only have academics to show for. They maybe book smart but other than that their empty vessels.

motul,

People who are applying to haas are around 19 years old - they are in no way shape or form expected to have 5 years experience. This is not an MBA program were copious amounts of relevant experience is needed.

In fact, most 4.0 ccc students DO get in - some get rejected but that is because they didn't complete the prereqs or did a terrible job on the essays or had absolutely 0 work/ec's.

Also, you should consider Berkeley's Economics program, because your chances at haas are slim to none. 3.6 for haas won't cut it - even economics would be a reach for you. GL anyway.

Blurry,

The adcoms look at both.

I know of quite a few who get in with low GPA's like mine.

RealExample...where did you get that info as to the age of the Haas applicants? motul's experience of running a business will most certainly improve his chances... Berkeley is a different animal than all the other UC's when it comes to the "total picture"....
As far as Blurry's chance...again..has a very good chance even though ccc have priority...the reason is becuase he has proven that he can keep a ralatively high GPA at a UC level of curriculum.
Good luck to both of you guys as you both have excellent chances of getting into Berkeley.

luvtolearn-

I am at a CCC with a 4.0 GPA. I am also part of Cal's business frat and part of their business/finance club, even though I am at a CCC.

About the age issue, most people apply when they are about 19 years old. It's an undergraduate school, it's not like an MBA program where age fluctuates heavily depending on work exeprience.

You say "berkeley is a different animal than all other UC's"...Haas is a different animal than all other majors at Cal.

"he has proven that he can keep a ralatively high GPA at a UC level of curriculum."...Sorry, a 3.6 doesn't cut it, ESPECIALLY from another UC - since ccc kids get priority and only a few (think single digits) make it in from other UC's. A friend of mine majoring in biz-econ at UCLA had a 3.8 and an internship with Merril Lynch...he got rejected from Haas.

hmm...that's interesting...you still haven't answered my question though...where did you get the information about the age of the Haas applicants? Transfer students come in a variety of ages, more so now than ever before and even though they do not require previous experience, it is definately a plus to have it.

btw...one of my classmates (I'm a double major at Cal) got accepted to Haas w/ a 3.58 GPA, she has owned her own business the last 8 years and was a transfer student (if you do the math, definately not age 19). So it can be done. Unless you are an Adcom, which I hardly doubt, you do not have the experience nor the resources to determine if someone's GPA is going to "cut it". I have seen people get in w/ a GPA lower than yours and I have seen people w/ a 4.0 get disapointed. Again, they look at the whole picture just like they did w/ her.

Some older people have lower GPA's because they did poorly when they were younger - and when they returned they did very well (3.9+ range). Was she a ccc transfer? About work experience, her experience of owning a business is much different than managing your parents business as one of the above posters has.

I got the information on the age from a haas councelor, you're more than welcome to visit the offices and ask them yourself.

It just irks me when people declare that a 3.6 and some bs work experience is going to cut it.

I don't need to visit the office..it's posted right on their website like it always is. The average age is not 19 it's 22...and the age range is between 19-49.

plenty of different ages there with experience
