Chances at BME programs?

<p>There are a lot of schools I'm looking at but I'm really not sure where I want to go yet...</p>

<p>MIT (loved it), CMU (also loved), Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, RPI, Penn State (Honors?), Princeton (might as well try, visited and liked it), maybe UPenn (heard good things about engineering)</p>

<p>UW GPA: 4.0
W GPA: ~4.9/4.9 (~99 average weighted)
Rank: 1/~70
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White</p>

<p>SAT: 2320 (770 CR, 770 M, 780 W)
SAT II: 800 Bio, 790 Math IIC, taking chem next year</p>

<p>AP Classes: AP Bio, BC, US Gov (took in May, scores pending. should be 5s, maybe a 4)
next year: AP USH, AP Chem, AP Spanish Lang, AP English Lit</p>

<p>Interesting story/essay: diagnosed with genetic disease when 7 years old, have a medical device in chest to get IVs. So that's why I'm interested in BME.</p>

<p>EC's:</p>

<p>volunteered at local hospital ICU one summer, in the lab the next summer. The year before I did the ICU I washed dishes in the hospital's kitchen. Maybe 100 hours total.</p>

<p>shadowed with a doctor/researcher at the NIH who researches the disease I have. got to go to meetings, see what she does, all that kind of stuff. </p>

<p>piano - ~10 years - honorable mention in local school of music's merit scholarship competition. may pursue at CMU</p>

<p>varsity HS tennis (4 years) - probably not college varsity level though</p>

<p>international club officer - plan trips, films, etc. to see different cultures</p>

<p>Potential Hook: interested in BME with my medical situation?</p>

<p>Other smaller EC's/awards:</p>

<p>NHS
AMC 10 school winner (didn't take 12 last year, snow day). maybe next year
UMD High School Math Exam winner (very similar to AMC)
Spanish NHS
Senior class treasurer</p>

<p>Recs: should be good, one from biology teacher and one from government/USH teacher </p>

<p>I'm looking for some more BME-related ECs to do but I'm not sure what to get into. Any suggestions?</p>

<p>Your stats look good knock the essays out of the water and apply early to the one you really want and you have a fairly good chance at any of the above schools. I would be willing to say >50% at each individual school.</p>

<p>thanks for the input. does applying early action (as opposed to ED) really help? i’ve heard some rumors that it does and some rumors that it’s harder to get in but no definite info. is there a real answer to this?</p>

<p>Yes it does help quite a bit you are looking at an increase of about 15-20% acceptance for most schools.</p>
