Interesting story/essay: diagnosed with genetic disease when 7 years old, have a medical device in chest to get IVs. Actually it was put in at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. So that's why I'm interested in BME.

EC's:

volunteered at local hospital ICU one summer, in the lab the next summer. The year before I did the ICU I washed dishes in the hospital's kitchen. Maybe 100 hours total.

Potential Hook: interested in BME with my medical situation?

Other smaller EC's/awards:

NHS
AMC 10 school winner (didn't take 12 last year, snow day). maybe next year
UMD High School Math Exam winner (very similar to AMC)
Spanish NHS
Senior class treasurer

Recs: should be good, one from biology teacher and one from government/USH teacher

yup you’re in practically for sures.
like 100% unless you show some kind of bad attitude or character in your words.
i know because i got in BME

I think you’re in if you apply ED.

If you apply RD, then your chances are probably the same as most people … meaning not great.

Very good GPA, rank, SAT and AP scores.
Unfortunately, your ECs are ordinary and not very impressive, nor are they suggestive for your interest in BME (or any other form of engineering). You needed some regional, if not national awards.
Also, I read somewhere that a small class size will not weigh in your favor, even if you’re a valedictorian.
What’s your weighted GPA? How difficult is your course load?
Write very good essays and try to obtain some good LORs. :)

My weighted gpa is about a 5.0 on a 4.9 scale, highest in my school I think. Not that that really matters. What kind of ECs/projects would you recommend for BME? I’ve been looking around for a while but I’m not really sure what to get into.

well, anything math/phys/chem/bio related. try the olympiad or other similar competitions…intel, samsung, etc
