Chances at boarding school

Hey my name is Derick. I'm from California.
I'm applying to boarding school this year; my choices are Exeter, Andover, and Choate. My average is B+ with an occasional A (Although I score extremly high on writing and history subjects--I'm striving for an A+ average this quarter).
I've done drama club and school choir for the past three years and I've been published (photography) 3 times in various teen magazines.
What are my chances?

Andover and Exeter will be looking for mostly As and a 95 or higher SSAT unless you're a URM or athlete. Choate is easier.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but I remember somebody telling me that if you're school is harder than most (Mine is) they'll put that into consideration.

well...i'm trying to apply for andover or exeter too (i'm in 8th grade). i homeschool right now, but before i was in choir and drama, etc. i agree with suze that you need to score a really good ssat. but i already gave up andover- it's 33,000 dollars a year. can't afford that, when i have an older sister who has to go to college soon.

i don't think your school being harder will do anything when accepting students. andover accepts less than thirty percent of students applying, and exeter once accepted twenty-six percent. the most important thing, i must say, is getting good grades at school. b+ will be a little too hard, but i won't give the hopes up if you have the money.

if you are in 8th grade too, (oh yea, i'm aslo in california) maybe we can help eachother get those schools :]

if you want, email me at chunpretty@hotmail.com or just send me a message here. good luck!

want-a-scholarship, don't give hope on andover--after all there is financial aid. Andover has one of the biggest secondary school endowments...

Oh yeah, I am in the eighth grade!

hey. i am an eighth grader in ny. im going to apply to a number of boarding schools for ninth grade (my top choice is choate). can anyone here tell me wut my chances r?

i am an a-student (my scool doesnt do gpas)
-im on track and tennis team

debate, newspaper, asian, math clubs

participated in geo bee. (got in third place in school)
-my math is good, i guess, i take Math B, which is about geometry, i think. all i know is after math B is pre-calculus

i read like mad, started at age four, love american classics (wondering if that will be good 4 interview)
-does not need fanancial aid
cant think of more (my scool doesnt offer that many opportunities on competitions and stuff only on geo bee)

do not know wut my ranking is, but definitely not top five because my scool is highly competitive (one of top hundred in the nation)

thats it. and plse, can the ppl who reply not ask y would i apply 2 prep scool when mine is already so good. boarding scool is not an option 4 me, thats y. i HAVE 2 go next year.

Just apply to several. I've seen kids who seemed qualified who got into only one or none of the top schools. Add at least one second tier if you have to go. It's just like college, the top schools want diversity. They get tons of Asian applicants, tons from NYC, Cali is also overrepresented.

I would recommend that if a boarding school experience is what you want that you consider applying to a number of schools......perhaps as many as 8. Make sure you also put a couple of schools not in the Ten School Alliance. Boarding schools put together a class of students so if what you offer doesn't fit one it may fit another. Good Luck to all of the applicants here. Boarding School is an amazing experience........regardless of what school you choose.

thanx. but does anyone here attend any of the elite boarding schools?

I'm at Andover. I second Hazmat, it's been awesome.

recapafterused , i don't know..i mean, i still want to go to andover really badly, but hmm....well, i can't apply for financial aid. it's not like i'm an illegal resident or anything (i have E2 visa, and that IS legal), but our tax stuff looks like we are a bunch of rich ppl. ugh. i don't know too much about it, but both my mom and my older sister say they already tried it but didn't work. i just hope they'll give some scholarship despite of financial qualifications. :(

suze, i tried to send you a message, but it says you have too many messages already...i can't send any.

anyways, you go to andover???? whoa~ advices please :]

So, my ethnicity can help me? (Or hurt...)
I'm black. Somebody told me that dosen't matter, so I didn't mention it before.
I thought the need to pay financial aid only mattered at Exeter... I can pay full tuition.

hmmm it might help you, but not as much. i heard being azn or caucasian is worst....n if u r a native american, u r a shoo in. :] it's because schools want diversity...

wait....i don't know about high schools, though. that's what i heard about colleges//

yeah, i ethnicity and where u live does play a role. like i have a smaller chance, cuz im asian and i live in NY.

hmm, if u live in texas and is african american, not trying to be racist but i think that u have a better chance.

hey, suze, u go 2 andover? that's so cool. can u put down what your resume was like when you applied to andover? i just want to get the feel of the kids who get accepted. What kind of particular reasons do you think they accepted you?

and also what kind of questions they ask you in the interview?

thanx

My friend got into Exeter but not Andover. Then she decided to stay in public school because we're awesome. :P

just wondering...does a legacy status help you at all for boarding schools?

The acceptance rate for legacies at Andover is slightly higher (about 25% compared to 21%) but that is due to the fact that legacies are usually slighter stronger.
