If you've never heard of one of the schools above just put n/a :)

[Emphasized awareness of global issues, compassion, my growth as an individual through a humbling experience]

to be honest, this seems a bit cliched. a lot of my friends did the ‘i went to haiti and came back as a compassionate individual’ shtick, and their essays were…to put it nicely, they were less than sincere. i’m not saying that yours is also going to be insincere, but from experience…

however, your grades and extracurriculars seem very rigorous. is there a recurring theme to your application?

Your stats are very good for the most part. You have a great GPA, however you dont mention anything about your AP scores, although I will assume you took 3 AP exams/classes and got at least a 4 on each exam based on your AP Scholar award. Anyway, great GPA and great SAT scores so in terms of that, assuming your courses were in fact rigorous, are great.

On to your EC’s, again they are good. You seem to show yourself as a well rounded individual, and I personally like your focus on service EC’s (but that is just my personal bias). Anyway EC’s are good, however playing the devils advocate here, your EC’s dont really differentiate you too much from the applicant pool (or the top people in the pool), so you will have to ensure that your essays differentiate you from the rest in one way or another. I would advice you to move away from the global issues focus on your essay, especially if you havent actually lived in too many different countries before. The topic is a bit cliche imo. That being said you were vague in your CA Essay description so I could be way of base here.

High Reach: Brown, NW
Reach - Low Reach: Georgetown, JH, Ponoma
Target: Tufts, Wash U, Rice and Emory
Safety: Rochester

Dont know much about Scripps and Ponoma so cant comment on that.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the essay advice guys, I’m actually revising them right now so it’s very helpful.

jahdude: Well, I’ve taken all the highest level courses at my school, if that’s any indicator. In terms of AP scores, I didn’t include them because as far as I know they won’t be considered as part of my admission. Good inference though, and thank you for your thoughtful response :)

thotowoes: in terms of recurring themes, probably diversity/well-roundedness (since my prospective majors are interdisciplinary) and public service. I plan to do pre-med so there’s also the health aspect with my volunteering that I’m emphasizing. But now I’m worried about sounding too generic! On the bright side at least I’m not talking about a service trip ;)

you seem to be a competitive candidate at any of these schools, though I agree with thotowoes about the essay topic. You seem to be a very well-rounded individual and know yourself well. I think you have more to say than just the fact that you learned from a humbling experience!

With your GPA, SAT score, and extracurricular activities/awards i think you are competitive enough for all the schools listed above.

GPA, SAT, ECs, activities etc are all competitive. However, you stated that your prospective majors are neuroscience and anthropology but didn’t list any APs. APs are obviously very important in showing how rigorous your schedules were, but assuming you took APs related to your majors and achieved 4s or 5s, JH Rice Washington and Georgetown are the ones I would say to be the target. But even putting the APs aside, you should have good chances at these schools. Brown and NW are reach schools (but technically they are reach schools for almost everyone) so I would recommend to send applications anyway. Don’t know too much about the rest to comment.

Best of luck! :)

Stats wise, you are definitely competitive for all of the schools you listed. However, admissions decisions can often seem totally random. I live in St. Louis, and one of my smartest friends got rejected from Wash-U, while another who wasn’t nearly at his academic level was accepted. So while I don’t think you can say with total accuracy, your chances are definitely good.

Thank you all, your responses have made me feel a lot better in the middle of this whole process (though I realize I still have to put my very best foot forward in my essays). Knowing that, anyone have essay advice they’d like to share?

Your application is quite solid. Many of your schools are in the top 20 range, so it will be difficult to get into all of them. You have a chance at Brown, Pomona, and Northwestern, but they will be difficult overall, just because of their low acceptance rate. Out of WashU, Tufts, Georgetown, Emory, and JHU I’m sure you’ll get into at least two. In at scripps and U Rochester.

I think you have a very solid application. I agree with the posts above me. I would say Brown is a low reach/ reach and WashU is a low reach. I really hope you get in. Good luck!

Live in St. Louis and am familiar only with wash u on your list. You are right on target with what they would look for. Stay focused and keep your grades solid they do consider your senior year/difficulty. Good luck! You have done a great job.

I’m curious as to why there seems to be a consensus (based on how you guys ranked my chances) that WUSTL is easier to get into than NW. Especially since WUSTL’s overall acceptance rate was actually slightly lower than NW’s last year. Perhaps it’s a matter of school reputation? I’m not sure. But either way, thanks and chanced all of y’all back who posted links :)
