Chances at Brown ED (and backup like schools)

I’m a rising senior planning to apply ED to Brown, and do a double concentration in Poli Sci/Environmental Studies and a possible minor in public policy. Schools on my list, if I’m flat out rejected or deferred ED, would be (this is a really wide range of environments but lol I’m adaptable) Wesleyan, GWU, Boston College, UMich, and UCLA. UM-Twin Cities, Syracuse, and U of I would be my safeties.

Stats and Transcripts:
ACT: 36
SAT: 1590

APs: World (5). took Calc BC, Environmental Science (took enviro with a weekend program offered by my school), Lang, and APUSH this year and think I did well on them all. I’m taking Gov (both), Stat, Literature, Chinese

Academic GPA (only academic classes are weighted and factored in here): 5.0
All Subject GPA: 4.0

I’m a special “international” curriculum at my school - basically an advanced English, History, and Language program which is very selective (only about 15 kids from my school) and considered to be at AP level starting freshman year. I’m also on a PCB track.

9th: (equivalent of) Honors English 1, AP World (1/2 a year), Honors Chinese 2, Honors Alg 2, Honors Physics, Gym, Debate
10th: Honors English 2, AP World (1/2 a year), Honors Chinese 3, Honors Pre-Calc, Honors Chem, Yearbook, Debate
11th: AP Lang, APUSH, Honors Chinese 4, AP Calc BC, Honors Bio, Yearbook, Debate
12th: (finalized): AP Literature, AP Gov, AP Chinese, AP Stat, Peer Group, Yearbook, Debate

SAT Subject Test:
Math Level 1 - 800
Math Level 2 - 790
Biology E - 800
Literature - 790
US History - 800
World History - 800
Chinese - 780

Essays/Recs: Recs should be stellar, essays are ??? atm but should be good once i really get going

I’ll chance back!

@2018browndreams Your chances are probably significantly better than average, but almost nothing is a guarantee at any of the most highly competitive schools. Would recommend adding Yale to your list of possible RD schools, and also as something to consider as an alternate choice for Early Action. Yale and Brown seem to attract similar students and most of the students I know at both schools would have been very happy at either. For students needing financial aid (and a 100k family income would put most students in that category) I am somewhat leery of ED as it gives you fewer financial aid options as compared to EA. Someone who is accepted ED receives a take-it-or-leave-it financial aid offer. Someone accepted EA has the option of applying to other schools RD and receiving an offer that can be compared and used to negotiate a better offer with the financial aid offer that was received in the early round. That option is not available when applying and accepted ED.

Your chances looks great! Your debate is an awesome application spike.

Your EC’s look great. Although I would select a few ones you are really proud of and include those in your college apps as to not distract from your great debate achievements. Test scores are outstanding. GPA is outstanding as well. You have a great chance of getting in.

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/1994591-chances-at-penn-dream-school-advice.html#latest

Remember UCLA is the most applied to school. Think about how attending UCLA might allow you to change the world for the better and be able to articulate this. UCLA wants students who are out to change the world for others most in need. This is what they report at accepted students day.

Your academic qualifications are beyond amazing – they are near perfect (I have never seen anyone that has taken 7 subject tests and scored so well on all of them!!). You definitely have nothing to worry about in that area. Your ECs are also very impressive, and I can definitely see your interest in poli sci through your extensive involvement in debate as well as your volunteer work for campaigns. I think you definitely have a strong chance of getting into Brown ED, and even RD! You may even want to apply to “more elite” schools like Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, which though may still be reaches for you, still are inside your range of schools that you can get into. Good luck! I would love it if you could chance me back here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1995754-chance-me-low-gpa-rank-cornell-rice-wash-u-ucla-etc-p1.html

With your stats and your financial situation, you should apply to UChicago as well. The school is BOTH need-based AND Merit Based. Given your 4.0/36ACT and 100k single household situation, you will get a full ride if admitted.

I think you have a really great chance (especially with those test scores and ECs!). I disagree with collegeboundprogrammer, I think your ECs as they’re listed on this post look great. Some would say you should cut Juggling and Magic club or the One Acts, but I think they add a quirk factor to your app and make you stand out! If you put time into something, you should definitely list it. You’ve earned it, you know?

I’m applying to Brown '22 as well, I have a chance me post if you want to look at it. Best of luck to us both!

Wow you took a lot of Sat IIs

If by U of I you mean the University of Idaho, you’re golden. Depending on what state you live in, you could go there and pay $0 in tuition (check out the WUE program). Moscow is a beautiful place. Congratulations on your achievements!
