Chances at Brown ED

Hello! I know I've posted these stats before but some things have changed. I also went college visiting this summer, and I absolutely fell in love with Brown, and I wanted to see if I can get in.

SAT: 2310
M: 790
CR: 750
W: 770

ACT: 35
Rank: 6 out of class of 727
GPA: 3.97 (UW), 4.64 (W)
APs: US (score-4), US Gov't & Politics (didn't take test), Macroecon (5), Physics (5)
I've taken the hardest curriculum my school allows. Sophomore year I took 1 AP, Jr year 3, and this year I have 5.

ECs
My ECs are horrific and this is my biggest regret.
Freshman and sophomore year I sort of flitted around and joined a bunch of clubs but never went through with any of them.
Frosh: Nothing substantial
Sophomore: Newspaper, Service Club, Speech
Junior: French Club, Service Club
At the end of the year I was chosen for Service Club Executive Board and French Club VP
I have 120-ish hours of volunteering which I've been doing for 2 years at a hospital, and a year of volunteering as a teacher's assistant.
This year I plan to continue with the paper, service club, french club, volunteering and perhaps join a few new clubs (but not because I want to fatten up my EC list, just because I want to). I'm also going to take some art classes (also my own choice).

The summer between jr and sr year I got a job at Best Buy and worked about 30 hours a week. I've quit since school started but I plan on getting another one that will allow be to work about 7 hours a week.

My teacher recommendations: I think one will be excellent, and another very good but not great.

Hooks: I have done some oil painting & charcoal drawing. Based on what others have said, they're pretty good (not to be conceited). I also spend a lot of time doing web/ graphic design stuff, if that counts.

If I don't make it into Brown, I'll be applying RD to Northwestern, Tufts, Washington, and U Chicago. My safety school is UIUC.

Any feedback would be awesome! Thanks!

your problem is self-identified. you need to find a hook from your ec's. it seems like the painting stuff could satisfy, enter them into some competitions and get a supplemental rec from an art teacher

OK. Thanks! Would a private art teacher count, or does it need to be a school one?

High chance you will get accepted Brown ED.

Really MorsVenit? Thanks! So even my un-stellar ECs won't prevent me from going there?

Great numbers!

I have the same problem as you. My extracurricular are not very impressive... no leadership positions, etc. >_< I wish I knew how important EC were back in Freshman year...

Good luck!

I have the exact oposite problem!!!

I like Brown a lot. I have decent but not stellar grades (about top 15% of my class with a good number of AP's) My EC's are the **** though. I am leader of 3 clubs, worked in an AIDS research lab and a political consulting firm. I play 3instruments and am in 4 bands. I cofounded a speakers series at my school... the list goes on. not to brag, remember... my grades are crap. :)

I have a brilliant idea. we combine our stuff into one application and get in everywhere..... colleges say that's ok right? No? Damn, ah well.

My advice is try to get behind a cause and really rack up service hours or do something that you can write a great essay about. Colleges don't just like to see a few EC's here and there, they like to see a small number of things you are really interested in... so get really interested in something I guess is the best advice I can give.

Numbers-wise you are golden, I'd say you have a good shot.

Mike, you have a good chance of getting in as long as your SAT's are good! 15% isn't too bad if you've taken a lot of hard classes. Your leadership and music skills will make you stand out.

My sat's are as follows

Math 740
Reading 760
Writing 660 (Will retake to boost this section. should get 700+)

And I have 3 700+ sat2's

So I have a shot then? I am hoping so anyway

P.S. sorry to steal this chances thread and turn it into my own.

omg your scores are sooo much better than mine!! What are you talking about!? xD Your chance is big big!

I only wish SAT's were given as much weight as grades... then I would be in like Flinn.... alas, I will do my best senior year and hope for the best.

Thanks for the confidence.

123orange, where do you go to school? still in high school or does orange mean you are a syracuse... or are you at brown?

loll nah I just like to eat orange... lol
I'm going to be a Senior too. I'm applying for Cornell for ED, unless my counselor blocks me on my way out from her office and scream "NO!"

haha and why would your counselor do that?

P.S. I'm more of a satsuma kind of guy :)

ahh. another early applicant to brown lol.

as far as e/cs

is ther eanything your school lacks? a cllub that you want to start?? (this is what i did this past summer to buff up my resume)

my grades blow.

your SATs are amazing, srsly.

Thanks for all the replies!

Good idea, Mike1717, we'd make the perfect applicant :D

And wudanyan, I was thinking about that but sadly our school is tight on money, so I don't think I'd be able to do anything. Thanks though!

And also, the whole prospect of ED is kind of freaking me out now, does anyone think I have a chance RD?

Hmmmmmmm well.

You could fundraise. for your cause (which is kinda selfish)

but it gives yo usomething to write about for an essay

afterall, colleges like to see initiative :)

That's true. Thanks for the idea!

Any thoughts on RD vs ED?

I really hate it when people bump threads... but bumps.

:(
