hey! I'm from Western Mass too... (Adams... Hoosac)

I hear Williams has a local quote for us local students.. they lower the admissions standards slightly in an effort to attract more local students, educate them, and subsequently improve the at-time dire socio-economic conditions of Berkshire County.

And your SAT scores are almost identical to mine (I'm 2140, 680 M, 670 CR, 790 W)... 720 on USH, 670 on ML1..

I also got a 5 on AP USH :-)

I think we have shots at Williams, although yours is probably better than mine, simply because your HS (Lenox??) is significantly more competitive/intelligent than mine.

See you at the next Quiz Team meet!? :-P

As for your other schools... Brown, Princeton, Duke, Penn, Northwestern, Amherst.... all seem like slight reaches to reaches. You're SAT score is kinda low for all of those.. As for a western mass "hook," possibly at Northwestern or Duke... but don't count on it. You should try some slightly less competitive schoosl such as Middlebury, Bowdoin, BC etc.

Amherst is a maybe, Williams looks pretty good.

make sure you have a safety, those are all extremely competitive.

Thanx, anyone else?

I actually already got deferred ED from Brown. I guess it could be worse - i'll have to wait to march/april to find out. My essays were all pretty good and i know my teacher recs were awesome. Everyone tells me i'll get into at least one of the big three (Brown, Penn, Princeton). Where are you applying?

by the way, i have legacy at Williams - my dad went there.

I second what huskem said, make sure you have a safety and some matches, I wouldn't be shocked if you didn't get into any of those schools (not to say you aren't a strong candidate, but...)

Edit: I don't believe that being from Western Mass is anything close to a hook. There are lots of competitive students/schools in W. Mass. Yes, it is more rural than Eastern Mass, but it's still well represented in schools and, frankly, all Massachusetts is Massachusetts, and will add nothing to the school's perceived geographical diversity. Just don't bank on that being a hook.

Like Kev07wan said, for kids in Western Mass who are in the top like 5% of their class and are reasonably well-rounded, Williams will almost definitely accept them. It's a very nice deal that i hope to take advantage of and my dad went there - thanks for the input:)

So you're basically in at Williams, although there's still the chance you could not get in. I agree, you could use some matches/safeties.

I'm applying to Williams, Wesleyan, Bowdoin, Vassar, Brandeis, Skidmore, Wheaton (MA), and my safeties are Suffolk and Hampshire.

You'd have a pretty good chance at Wesleyan, Bowdoin, Vassar... schools of that competitiveness.

But yea, Duke, Brown, Penn, Princeton, Duke, Northwestern, Amherst - it's not entirely impossible that you could be rejected/waitlisted from all of them.

I think you have a pretty decent chance at Williams though, with the local and the legacy. But don't bank on it as a safety.

I feel pretty good with Duke (match) because I have a close relative who is on their list of 20 most distinguished business alum. He donates about $50,000 a year. Yeah - impressive. I'm sure if i give him a call, he'll talk to the board of admissions for me.

haha... you seem to have some pretty good connections...

I have almost none. lol

But ya wanna check out my chance thread and rate my chances? Particularly at Williams, given the local preference?

Brown - slim chance
Penn-OK chance
Princeton-no chance
Duke-OK chance
Williams-decent chance
Northwestern-good chance
Amherst -decent chance

All of those schools are so similar in selectivity that I don't know how you can arbitrarily go around saying"

"Brown - slim chance
Penn-OK chance
Princeton-no chance
Duke-OK chance
Williams-decent chance
Northwestern-good chance
Amherst -decent chance"

I mean, how are you differentiating between an "okay chance" and a "decent chance"? Really, now. Sure, Northwestern may have a significantly higher admit rate than Princeton...but I don't think you can really differentiate between the selectivity of the other 5 schools with any sort of accuracy whatsoever.

And polysciguy...$50,000 is a drop in the bucket for a school like Duke. That's barely more than a year's tuition for one student. It's nothing. Though, I'm sure if either Williams or Duke read these posts, they'd happily reject you. Williams is, under no circumstances, a safety for you. Stop being a snot and do yourself a favor to ensure that, come April, you won't be left with no options. Please.

You got a pretty good chance at most of the schools your applying to although many are reaches nonetheless.
