Chances at Brown University?

My cousin three years got into Harvard with an ACT score of 23! And a guy at my school last year got into Harvard with a SCT score of 1730 and an ACT score of 26! My family jokes its because they're Black. Not acceptable if they're were White or Asian.
Well I really want to go to Brown University to major in Philosophy! Either that or University of Texas, Austin.

Female
Black
Parents are immigrants from Nigeria
ACT-29
GPA-3.67
Rank-Top 15%

not sure what else they want. not really sociable, but was vice president of DECA(marketing club), student council representative, psychology club, um, some community service. i work 18-20 hours a week. come from a competitive high school.
so would me being black and my parents from another country give me an advantage??

while it's a definite advantage to be black, i've also heard stories about black applicants with 2000+ SAT scores and 30+ ACTs being rejected. i think you probably have a good chance, but i wouldn't count it as a sure thing. anyway, good luck!

Yes, being black, and especially coming from Nigeria, is an advantage. You probably heard this already, but I have to say that Ivies are a reach for everyone even with a good SAT score or amazing grades. It certainly doesn't hurt to apply though.

OKAY. I've talked with some Brown students and they say Brown University focuses more on the essay than than the actually scores and GPA, however it doesn't hurt. One said they are looking for the extremist of the crowd (?) I might take the SAT, except I live in Houston and everything has basically been shut down. Still waiting FOR LIGHT!!! I haven't been to school in more than a week. I hope they take my disadvantage into consideration.
