-I am very involved in music, I have taken band for all 4 years in HS and music theory. I play a number of instruments, most notably guitar, piano and saxaphone. I am in the Jazz Ensemble, concert band, marching band and pep band in my school, I play alto sax in those. I have my own band outside of school (coming up on 4 years together) and we play shows in bars and clubs around the LI area often, sometimes for money.
- In the summer I volunteer at a cerebral palsy center working with children in a classroom environment. I have done it for the past three summers, roughly 35 hours each summer. This past time I spent working in the Music Therapy center teaching kids learning and listening skills through musical interaction.
-School Newspaper (9)
-Literary Magazine (10,11,12)
-National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, English Honor Society
- Science research program in my school through SUNY Albany, classes both in school and 90 hours of research each summer (I'll end up having 8 science credits upon graduation)
- Varsity Winter Track and Spring Track all four years, I throw shotput and discus, all-division discus, good enough to be a prominent thrower on most small liberal arts school's teams

I'm not sure of what I want to major in, possibly political science or psychology

Schools : Brown, Cornell, Amherst, Wesleyan, Vassar, Middlebury

What would you suggest as a good safety school? Is Vassar good or is it too iffy to chance?

Thanks

i would say too iffy to chance. i would look maybe at Boston University, Union, or U of Rochester for safeties- there you totally know you're in.

early decision would greatly improve already decent chances at the schools you listed

I disagree, I think you have very decently good chances at a lot of those schools. Brown and Amherst are the biggest reaches, of course. Try to look into being recruited by the sports teams - this helps a LOT! Your ECs look great. Your grades and SATs are good, but not outstanding, and that's your major problem... you need to have something else to make you stand out, like really great essays. Your love of music, and helping kids with cerebral palsy to learn and listen through music... if well-done, you could make that an amazing essay, especially if you include an anecdote from your experiences.

My friend who had a 1580 but lower grades (was just out of the top 10%, good ECs and great essays) was half-counting on Vassar, but she didn't get in. She got into Tufts and Bard and is looking into those schools. But Vassar... too iffy to consider a safety school.

It seems like you're looking for schools with kind of an LAC feel (except Cornell... seems like the odd one out on your list).

You should probably apply to a SUNY school as a total safety and a cheap one. Look at maybe Union and Skidmore. I agree that you should apply ED to the place that you love the most - I recommend Wesleyan because it's the most amazing school ever. (Note: I'm going there :P)

Apply ED to Vassar-males have a huge edge there and they are trying to improve their athletics. Make a real show of interest-visit, meet dept chairs etc. Oberlin is a good match--strong in science and lots of music in the community. Georgtown EA is another good match.
Good Luck!
