Chances at Brown

Hey guys! For those of you with more knowledge of the transfer admissions process...

I would like to transfer to Brown at the end of this, my first year at UCLA. I should have around a 3.5 at the end of this first quarter. With a weighted 4.2 out of high school (with an upward trend- 4.8 my last semester) and 1470 on the old SATs, will I be a competitive applicant? I did not apply to Brown as a freshman.

I think you would have had a shot as a freshman...

Well, I would certainly apply. A 3.5 after first quarter is great; getting it higher is even better.

Good luck...
AS.

What are your extracurriculars? recs? essays?

from what i have been hearing, a 3.5 makes you competitive anywhere. A 3.6-3.7 I think is another level though, but it is your first quarter.

My ecs from college are...
I am in Model United Nations, for which I am an intern on the School Relations Staff. I also chaired a committee at the MUN conference that we host for high school students and will be competing as a delegate at conferences at Harvard and in New York.

I am also involved with the Political Science Student Organization, the liason group between professors and students in the poli sci department. I am on the board of the Publications Committee, meaning I am one of the editors of the journal of political science research.

I am also involved with Campus Crusade for Christ (I host a weekly Bible Study) and the Bruin Bridge Club. (I hope to be on the team by the end of the winter quarter- they are ranked 4th in North America)

Btw my major is currently a double major in economics and political science. I am thinking about dropping the econ to a minor to allow me to take some history and literature classes, but at Brown I don't believe I would have to do so.

At least one of my letters of rec will be from a TA, but it should be quite strong. The other will hopefully be from my Chinese professor. I will have her again next quarter, so I should have enough of a relationship by the end of the next quarter to ask for a letter.

so... while on the topic of brown... does anyone know if they will still have you application if you applied as a high school senior? i applied last year, and was ultimatley waitlisted, so when evaluating my transfer app, would they know that?

i know a lot of schools do that. call them to find out for sure.

does anyone else have thoughts on my chances to transfer?

I think, in the case of Brown, it's really more random then other admissions.

I think you definitely have a reasonable chance, anything else I can't say.

hi pvbebe - just wondering why you want to transfer? i'm at uc berkeley right now and am wanting to transfer out as well, so we're pretty similar.. :]

How about transfer chances for Georgetown, specifically SFS? the International Political Economy major is such a perfect program of study for me, but I am having a tough time finding info on transfers to SFS, so I can't really judge my chances.

Thank you so much!

anyone know?

Georgetown accepts very few transfers into the SFS, and I am not sure that a 3.5 is competitive enough.

Will my second quarter grades be considered? The quarter ends near the end of March, and my GPA should go up now that I've gotten through that all-important transition term.

I am not sure if it will be officially considered. I faxed my third quarter grades to Georgetown. If the grades are good, there is no harm in doing so, in my opinion.

awesome. thanks for all your help!

Wow! really? I have a 4.0 in college and so far it's looking like it's going to stay that way. But then again, I go to a party school where academics are not priority for the students.

It depends on the school from which you are applying. Adcoms have told me, directly, that they will take the 3.6-3.7 from Duke over any 4.0 from the third tier.

how favorably do adcoms look at a transcript from UCLA? i know it is not an ivy, but is an honors student from UCLA given similar favor to, for example, students from top LACs?
