Chances at Brown...

I applied to Brown my senior year and made the mistake of procrastinating until the last possible minute write my essays and submit my application. In the end, I was rejected. I am hoping to transfer after my freshmen year at University of Kansas. I plan on making the most of my freshmen year, but Brown is my #1 school.

High School Stats-

I know that waiting until the last minute really hurt the writing for my application and I am already planning ahead for this year. So, what are my chances? Thoughts, questions, concerns are welcomed. Also, about how far in advance do you reccommend me sending in the final application before the due date?

If you’re applying as a transfer student, chancing you now would be pointless as you haven’t taken any college classes yet. Work your tush off in college, do some ec’s related to your major and enjoy your time there.

And why’d you bother retaking the SAT with such a good score on the ACT? Can’t you send that instead?

I used my ACT this year and was hoping to maybe do way better on the SAT. Not sure yet though- just a thought I had.

In all honesty, I very much doubt Brown will acceept you after 1 year of college. Your scores including ACT are below their median (SATlls way below), your rank is good but not great at Brown and you have no stand out EC.

Getting in as a transfer is harder than getting in as a freshmen. You need to take 2 years and build great ECs, have great grades and develop relatioships with profs so they can write outstanding recs.

What would qualify as outstanding as far as an EC? I really have spent a huge amount of time doing activities for the community and school, but did not take the time to explain it all.

Undergraduate research.

I too would suggest planning on spending 2 yrs and applying as a jr. If you try to apply as a soph transfer, you will only have completed 1 sem/qt at your current college and so B will give more weight to your HS record and tests scores. While you UW gpa is pretty good, most of your test scores, particularly SAT IIs and APs, indicate that your HS has significant grade inflation.

I have now completed my first year at KU and here are my stats:

Fall:
Calculus II Honors: A
English Honors Pro-Seminar: A
Intro. to Chemical Engineering: A
Chemistry I Honors: B
Musical Theatre Dance: A
Engineering Learning Community: A

Spring:
Elementary Linear Algebra Honors: A
Vector Calculus Honors: B
Excel VBA for Engineers: B
Philosophy-Reason & Argument: B
London Review: A (Study Abroad during Spring Break in London-contributed to the London Review publication with writings of experiences)

GPA: 3.41 (Will bring this up!)
