Chances at Bucknell

My son and I are doing the college search thing now. Looked at many schools and Bucknell is really standing out to him. How does he look?
SAT: 1st time Math-740, CR-630, WR-580=1950
2nd time Math-720, CR-590, WR-640=1950
Do the writing scores even matter? Are these good scores?
His weighted GPA is 4.009. This year (JR) he took AP Latin, AP Chem, AP US History, Honors Math, Honors Eng. Next year (SR) he will take AP Stats, AP Econ, Honors Math, Honors English & Honors Physics. Still waiting on ACT score. SAT subjects were: Math 1-770, US History-710, Chem-730.
He was on 3 varsity sports this year, Nat'l Honor Society, will have his rank of Eagle Scout by the fall, over 200+ hrs. community service. He's thinking of Engineering School and maybe business minor. His recommendations will be good.
This is my first child, so still figuring system out. He would like to apply ED here. How does he look? Thanks for any help!

Your son’s scores will make him a competitive candidate. His critical reading score is in the 50% percentile range while his math score is in the 75% percentile range. The average SAT of an engineering student is 1357 (I’m not sure if that is the average of the class of 2014 or the entire college of engineering). With regard to the writing score, it doesn’t carry much weight. According to Bucknell’s common data set, Bucknell doesn’t have a policy for using the writing component. Personally, the required essay for the application will be more indicative of a candidate’s writing ability. I struggled to write a decent essay within the SAT’s time constraint; ETS should allot about 20 more minutes for the writing section. His SAT Subject Test scores are also very respectable, so I don’t think there’s anything to worry about there.

Your son’s application looks stronger than the one I sent in four years ago, so I think there’s a high chance he’ll be admitted. Remember, that the admissions board takes a holistic approach to evaluating applications, and as a result, scores alone won’t guarantee admission. Have your son strongly consider what he puts in the supplement, as the supplement seeks to identify a candidate’s interest and unique qualities. Bucknell, as of late, seems to be very conscious about its yield rate, and consequently, they will have no qualms about culling candidates who submit a generic application.

Since your son is also interested in business, take a look at Bucknell’s 5-year Engineering-Management program. [Engineering-Management Program || Bucknell University](http://www.bucknell.edu/x20347.xml)

Good luck with your college search.

Thanks so much. He pressed the ED button this past weekend. I think his supplements were strong; and he ended up submitting his ACT which was a 32. His first terms grades were all A’s and one B+. He’s taking AP Stats, AP Calc, Honors Econ, Honors English & Honors Physics. Keeping fingers crossed…! It’s really his favorite!!

Applied ED to Bucknell, engineering school. How does this look: 4.01 weighted GPA, AP scholar junior year, all honors and 2 more AP’s senior year, ACT-32, NHS since 11th grade, 1st term senior transcript: all A’s, one B+, 3 sport varsity athlete, Eagle Scout, 100+ community service hours, strong recommendations, engineering internship last summer. Visited school twice, think essays were all good (did optional as well). What do you think? Loved Bucknell!!!

I would recommend looking at Lehigh (which is VERY similar to Bucknell). They have a great Engineering/Business 5 year program. Regardless, I think your son would be in Bucknell quite easily. Only recommendation would be to raise his SAT scores a bit. But he has plenty of time to do that. Good luck!

might also look at holy cross and colgate-very good schools with fantastic business alumni network.
