Chances at Business or Ag

Hey, i just got my SAT back and I am very impressed with it and it has sort of revived my interest in cal poly and my chances at getting in… so here are the stats I will have after this semester.

UC GPA: 3.15 (my hs gpa will be 3.35)
SAT:
720 Math
640 RC
650 Writing with an 11 on the essay
total 2010
I will be vice president of interact next year.

So im wondering what chance I have at getting into the following majors:
Viticulture (agriculture)
Finance (business)
Statistics (science & mathmatics)

both my parents went to cal poly but i guess that doesnt matter.

thanks :)

GPA is a bit on the low side - you will seriously need to do some bumpage on that part, since the GPA eats up the plurality of the selection process. Test scores are well above average, and can be weighted anywhere from 25-35% during the selection process.

By the way, Cal Poly (as with other CSUs) is currently thinking of not using the writing component of the SAT at all (so a perfect score is still 1600), however it may change. They still have a strong preference for the ACT, however.

Here's the breakdown:

Agriculture: Not that hard by any means; if your test scores and GPA balance out, there isn't really much difficulty.

Business: Gets more competitive every year (because the OCOB's applicant pool keeps increasing while pretty much all others remain constant). I'd say it's a bit of a reach because of the lower GPA.

COSAM: May be a bit of a reach, since the average GPA of the admitted applicants is usually around 3.9-4.0.

ok i just found out at the cal poly admissions thing that freshman year is part of the GPA... in that case my GPA isnt 3.1 its more like 3.35 including freshman year and my 8th grade spanish/algebra. does this change my business chances?

isn't gpa only sophomore and junior years?

Cal Poly counts frosh year.

Ag- gpa's still a bit low(I think the avg. is a 3.5), but the sat's will help. I'd think you'd get in.

Business- Harder to get into..I'd say maybe.

COSAM- Probably not. Very selective college.

If you want to have a good shot at business you'll need a 3.7 at least. Your SATs look good.

oh and she also said they aren't counting the writing section, so that means i would be applying with:

3.35 GPA
1360 SAT
Vice President of startup e-business (internet hosting etc), and i guess i would get points for that being connected to my major.

apply for a different major, you definitely won't get in under business. good SAT's though! maybe agriculture though...definitely nutrition (in the ag college). a lot of dumbasses i know are going for nutrition...it's a joke.

oh and the cal poly application is strictly numbers, and they only ask for amount of extra-curric hours, and it also asks if it relates to your major.

that last statement i made about nutrition sounded harsh...but a lot of kids are just going for the cal poly "scene" or just to be going to cal poly. they don't seem to care about what they study...

haha yeah a really dumb girl from my school will be showing up at cal poly this fall for Soil Science...

i dont feel like going through the whole process of changing majors at cal poly though.

Cal Poly purposely designs their "major-changing" system in a manor to discourage anyone from applying for an "easy" major then changing to something like architecture or engineering.

If your stats are below average, it may be a bit of a gamble for the more popular majors. Your best bet right now is to make sure that your test scores are good enough to "make up" for the GPA (since it's purely a numbers game).

Your final "score" is based on the following: (varies by major)

9-11th grade GPA: 40-45%
10-11th grade GPA: 0-5%
CSU coursework completion beyond minimums: 10-20%
Test scores: 25-35% (ACT scores are automatically converted to an equivalent SAT score)
ECs and work experience: 5-10%
