Cal Poly is a very competitive school for freshman, especially those trying to get into any engineering major. You do have really good stats and are pretty much sure to get into any other CSU, but as for Cal Poly it is definitely not a gurantee. Go check out average GPA and SAT scores for yourself. Im not trying to discourage you from applying because anything can happen, but a low SAT score can greatly hinder your chances.

I think Cal Poly San Luis is a good match for you. From what I understand It's actually not that difficult to get in with stats like yours. But I could be wrong.
I think you might possibly have good enough SAT's, GPA, class rank etc. to get into the lower UC's. But it doesn't seem like you really have anything that sets you apart from all the other applicants wtih similar scores. What are your ec's?

Awards:

Student of the month (Sep. 2004) for my AP Physics class

"Best in Division" award for my CAD-based architecture project at the Riverside County Industrial Education Expo (June 2004)

Furthermore, it wasn't until 11th grade that my grades showed any significant improvement.

OK, I just went to princetonreview's site and played with their "counselor-o-matic" thingamajig

My results came out pretty pessimistic, but i guess that's because they don't factor in SAT2 scores.
I don't have an exact clue whether or not to take those results seriously.

Other notes:

In-state resident

Middle-class income (~$40-60k/yr. total)

Hmm... dang, just found out of someone who got rejected from SLO with a 4.0 GPA, 1540 SAT and a 5 on AP Comp. Sci. test (he declared Computer Science as his major).

Well, that sure adds to the "randomness" of admissions.
Anyone have any other thoughts?

Your ec's are a "little light" but there not that bad, you have to make the most of them and speak of them like they are major accomplishments. Also you are in the top 10% of your class, which helps you quite a bit. So don't give up.

Yeah, that was mainly the reason why I am eyeing SLO as a second option.

I never thought I'd reveal this, but this could probably help even more:

Oh yeah, I'd like some more opinions from those who currently go to those schools I listed, specifically those who were admitted directly.

BTW, if I take my SAT next month, will they still see it through an official school report? (I don't know the exact deadline for scores, but it is listed as "tests taken after November may not be guaranteed to be used")

i think if you were evaluated by ELC, you're good enough to get in as regular admission because ELC is based on the top 4% of your graduating class. i got evaluated too, but i didn't get in...they said my GPA was not high enough...oh well...even if i got accepted, i don't think it's gonna help THAT much because i heard it's only gonna guarantee you to get into UC Merced and other low-tier UC schools. but anyways, i don't think it's gonna affect your admission to the UCs.

i applied to cal poly too (hey i'm wondering if you're the same person from the other forum calpolyonline.com, becausei kinda recognize your name, but i could be wrong) i applied for ED though, i'm probably not gonna get in because my scores are on the low side (ACT- 23), very low side, but i did improve...lol i applied to other 5 schools too, ucdavis, ucsd, ucla, ucsc and csu chico. ucsc and chico are my safe schools; ucsd and ucdavis and cal poly are the schools that i'm hoping to get in; and ucla...impossible..lol just wanna see if i'd get in since i got fee-waivered...

I think if you signed up for ED and get deferred, you are automatically put on the RD list.

I think the selectivity rating goes something like this, but I could be wrong:

1) UCB and UCLA
2) UCSD
3) UCD, UCSB, Cal Poly SLO
4) UCI
5) UCSC, UCM
6) UCR

Anything can happen though, according to CB's site, an ACT score of 23 is 25th percentile at UCSD and SLO, and there's usually always people who fall below those ranges and still gain admission.

yea...i hope so, but i think that the selectivity rating...cal poly SLO should be the same as UCSD, because i saw the admit rates for UCD and UCSB, they're not that hard to get in..

From what my buddy tells me, there's plenty of freshmen at UCSD who don't seem prepared for college at all (but that might be the case with any other school too).

And keep in mind that selectivity and acceptance rate are different - selectivity more generally refers to selecting applicants who generally stand out from another (e.g. strict criteria on ECs or difficulty of classes taken in high school). There are some midly selective schools out there with some low acceptance rates too.
