thanks in advance for your help. i am a high school junior at a public school looking at mostly UCs, as i'd like not to go into debt for undergrad education, and i'd have to do that with most private schools. Anyway, here is my info:

GPA - 4.2 weighted, 3.8 unweighted

Sats - 2310 (800 math, 740 verbal,770 writing)

4 Aps so far - environmental science, us history, english language, calculus - planning to take statistics and physics next year.

extra-curriculars-
i am a musician and composer - i play saxophone in my school orchestra & jazz band. also i play percussion and the piano. the orchestra has played my compositions on two different occasions. this is my biggest hobby, although i'm not sure i want to go into a music career yet.

also i am a boy scout and i do community service through a couple clubs at my schoool. I have played on varsity golf since freshman year.

i've been employed at a local record store for over a year now.

i'm very passionate about my interests, mostly music and i'm also very interested in math. however that doesn't really show up so much on my application. how much of a chance do i have at some of these schools:

ucla
uc berkeley
ucsd
ucsb

also some private schools(although i might need substantial financial aid to make it work):
usc
cornell
stanford (i love this school! but i'm not expecting it)
johns hopkins
columbia

any other suggestions of schools would be wonderful. thanks a ton to all you college-knowledgable people.

i'm not a "collegeknowledgeable person" but from general trends on this site, i would say:

ucla:match
uc berkeley:match
ucsd:safe match
ucsb:safety
usc:match
cornell: match/slight reach
stanford :reach
johns hopkins: match/slight reach
columbia: reach

jabind2007:

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCB/UCLA: Match
UCSD: Safe Match
UCSB: Safety

You don't mention a language AP. Taking 4 years of language helps with all the schools.

thanks for the input. yes, i am a california resident, but i havent signed up for a 4th year of french. If that's going to hurt my chance of admission into some of those schools maybe i will talk to my counselor and reconsider that decision.

Jabin, you sound like my son though he took the IB. He was a pseudo Ca. resident but spent most of his life overseas. He composed and played oboe and sax. He applied to CA schools, picking USC, UCSB CCS, and Redlands. In the end, though accepted into the composition programs in all the CA schools he chose Lawrence University in Wisconsin. This school is allowing him to get a degree in Composition, keep up his study with the oboe (he gave up the sax) and get another degree in government (another love of his). They have wonderful merit scholarships and need based aid. It was as cheap for him to attend Lawrence as UCSB (in state) and USC (financial awards). His roommate next year is a student from CA. In his freshman year, first term he was in a composition class of 2 students. This term he has a tutorial with a wonderful composer. This is his first year. I highly recommend that you at least contact them.
