Chances at Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Tufts?

hoo_29, will my extra curriculars, national awards, and 4.0(UW, all honors/ap) junior and senior year i'm sure i'll stand a chance at tufts (and my mother being a trustee may help;) )

Hoo_29 is pretty immature. Tufts is a reach for practically everyone, however, you seem to be well rounded. Try and let the school know you're interested. Early decision to the school if it's your #1 choice, get interviewed, contact them every now and then. Let them know you want in. Try and do solidly on your SAT's. If you're going to Tufts for its engineering program... you might want to look at other schools. I can't really speak of them much, but I always thought of Tufts as having great liberal arts courses and killer graduate/medical schools.

thanks, i'm only a junior and am probably going to do a westinghouse entry over the summer- i've secured lab space and mentors at Penn and Princeton

i'm also looking at CMU, and if westinghouse does well possibly MIT etc

Contrary to US News, Fiske's guide to colleges and Princeton Review both rate the engineering program as strong for an undergraduate education.

<a href="http://www.eecs.tufts.edu/%7Esanpawat/fiskeelite.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.eecs.tufts.edu/~sanpawat/fiskeelite.html</a></p>

I'm sure it's not bad at all.. I just don't think the school is known for its engineering program.

And I believe that Tufts Engineering is a bit easier to get into than LA, the LA accepted around 25% to pull the final acceptance rate up to 27%. It's not much, but they require the high test scores, which you obviously have. God bless the Trustees to keep the Hill brightly lit with Pax et Lux!

My friend is at RPI, he loves it there. I will be visiting and sleeping over for a week in january. (mostly to use their sweet shop for a bot project).

Just keep in mind that the USNWR engineering rankings include two MAJOR factors: Reputation amongst other schools (Deans of engineering schools who should know which schools are good) and Corporate Recruiters. Clearly if you wish to get a job in engineering, the opinions of corporate recruiters is HUUUUGE! If engineering school deans and corporate recruiters rank a school like Tufts poorly (which they do), that speaks volumes, man! Don't get me wrong here -- Tufts is an excellent school for many liberal arts programs, but engineering is obviously not something that Tufts excels at. For an excellent student such as yourself, do yourself a favor and drop them from your list.

I'm sorry kiddly but you're wrong.

"The U.S. News rankings of undergraduate programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology are based solely on the judgments of deans and senior faculty who rated each program they are familiar with on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished). "

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/about/05engmeth_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/about/05engmeth_brief.php</a></p>

Also note that the rankings are based purely off of doctoral reputation, not undergraduate (which deans often have a very limited experience in rating). Though some resources of the doctoral level do affect the undergraduate level, it is fair to say that Tufts invests a disproportionate amount of resources into the undergraduate program. This is the flaw of US News: It does not account for the undergraduate experience, which based off of reports of deans of associate institutions, is not representative of the quality of the engineering education. Other college books recognize the excellence of the Tufts Undergraduate Engineering Program. US News makes no such declaration of the sort. Instead, it gives raw data that may be interpreted incorrectly, as you so eagerly do so, Kiddly.

Sorry, Sniffles, but I'm referring to the grad school rankings. Which is totally related to undergrad rankings. There is absolutely no better criteria for the quality of engineering programs than what corporate recruiters think, as they are ultimately the judges of engineering school quality. What good is an engineering program that recruiters think poorly of? Eh?

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/about/05eng_meth_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/about/05eng_meth_brief.php</a>
40 % of the ranking:

Quality assessment (weighted by .40): Two surveys were conducted in the fall of 2003. Engineering school deans and deans of graduate studies were asked to rate program quality from marginal (1) to outstanding (5); 49 percent responded. The resulting score is weighted by .25. Corporate recruiters and company contacts from previously ranked programs were also asked to rate programs; 31 percent responded. Their opinions are weighted by .15.

Sorry, but you lose again Sniffles.

How are a doctorate rankings of an institution any way representative of the undergraduate education? It makes no sense. We're discussing the undergraduate prowess. You're dragging this out of context.

Acorn doesn't fall far from the tree, sniffles. Exeptions to every rule and all that good stuff but you won't find many highly rated grad programs that don't have highly rated undergrad programs in the same subjects. And Tufts engineering doesn't fall within the exception list, despite your bleating. LOL!!!

"And Tufts engineering doesn't fall within the exception list, despite your bleating."

On what grounds? You've cited nothing but circumstancial evidence of interpretations but hold them to be absolute truths. And if I may ask, did you ever apply to Tufts? Are you an engineer at northeastern? To say you don't have an obsession with attacking Tufts is absurd. Your previous posts (90%)have all been focused on attacking the Tufts Engineering department and promoting northeastern.

Wow Ho_29..your words are truly inspiring....
anyway starbot, since you are a junior like me, apply to RSI

Thanks BayesGuy! I am considering possible career options in the motivational speaking field. I think I found my niche! LOL.

hahaha thats actually pretty funny

Now honestly, that's rude. Stop harassing him.

Take your trash out of cc, it's not needed. You've just proven how immature you are, hoo_29.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Maybe Mommy can make it all better for you=). Just don't take things so seriously, OK? Maybe I'm joking, if you haven't noticed yet.

Hoo_29 we don't need your jokes, we come for advice, not to have fun. If this is your only place to have fun you need to "get a life". Have fun, but not at other's expense. There are plenty of comical threads and "everyday-life" threads you can post jokes in on CC, this part of the forum is the wrong place.
