I am considering applying to NYU CAS and i want to know my chances please.

SAT: 2010 (660 CR, 660 M, 690 W) (that was the first attempt, i'm retaking)
SAT II: I took 3, but since NYU requires only 2, my top 2 are 790 USH and 650 Chem

Rank: 1/two hundred something

GPA: 102/100 (weighted)

I also played soccer for 2 years
track and field 3 years
I have been a member of a community help organization in my school for 4 years (I may get a leadership position this year)
NHS member
Italian Honor Society Member
Volunteering at Mount Sinai this summer
I took the hardest courseload my school has to offer, all AP and Honors. So far I've taken 2 AP's
(US History 5, Chemistry 3), and I'm taking 4 more next year.
I have teachers who can write excellent recommendations for me.

Ethnicity: Arab-American (I plan to write about my immigration experience in my essay), also, Arabs are classified as White

I think you have a good shot. Your SAT I/SAT II is not that great, but you’re class rank is really high, as is your gpa.

Btw, it’s not that arabs/asians are classified as white, it’s just that they’re not underrepresented minorities, so they don’t get a boost coming in.

thanks for the info bicyclekick, I didn’t know that.

Wow, I can’t believe I’m white. All of a sudden I feel privileged and the urge to tan my skin to a darker shade to achieve a perfect summer glow :)

ok, please no one get offended by that statement…it really was a stupid joke. Besides, I’m white now, I can make these little jokes.

yeah there’s never an “arab” or “middle eastern” box on anything. but you could always check “other”. i’m egyptian-american so several people joked i should have checked african american. i still wonder if that would have worked.

it’s technically true but misleading. i wouldn’t be considered african american under the generally and socially accepted meaning of the term, which refers to black americans. plus according to the census bureau, i’d be considered white.

I have egyptian friends who checked african-american, because they are. And I have an asian friend who checked it also because her great-gramparents moved from china to morocco before coming to the U.S, and thus they’re registered as moroccan immigrants.

I guess I can technically check african (part egyptian) other (arab) and asian (I’m south asian/pakistani)

wow this thread has been taken over by arabs…sorry.

What about people who are directly from Africa, or didn’t have relatives who were slaves in America? Should they check ‘other’ too? I think you have the right to check whatever you want, without having to worry about other peoples sensitive judgement that they may or may not have. Such things ask for ethnicity, not skin color anyway (if they were asking for skin color, ‘white’ ‘black’ etc would be the options). What you’re basically saying is that you expect people to discriminate based on skin color still. Ethnicity is a factor, but admissions people etc understand that there is more than one type of African American. Applications are by no means ‘white’ or ‘black’!

PS - On the Common App there is an option ‘African American, African, Black’ meaning that they don’t assume that all africans are black, or that all africans have ancestors who were slaves (aka affirmative action) which is only logical.

Other ethnicity options on the application:

Native American, Alaska Native (date enrolled
Tribal affiliation
Asian American (country )
Asian, incl. Indian Subcontinent (country )
Hispanic, Latino (country )
Mexican American, Chicano
Puerto Rican
Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander
White or Caucasian
Other (specify)
