Chances at Chitown? Low SAT

Can anyone here tell me my chances at getting into Chicago.

Male
Middle Eastern
3.9 gpa
39/511 in Pretty competitive HS in Texas
SAT I- Math-660-Verbal-600-Writing-640
ACT-30

Extra:

-4 years of basketball, two varsity letters, and will be team captain this upcoming year (this takes up about 20 hours a week)
-Student Body President
-VP of Math Club
-Over 150 hours volunteering at the hospital
-Tribune in Latin Club
-Also in Key club, spanish club, french club, german club, JSA, international forum, and ultimate frisbee.
-Nominated for Sophomore of the year in the state of texas
-Also, I speak two languages, English of course and arabic
-Every summer I travel to Jordan for a month and visit my family that lives over there, which is probably what I would write about in my essay.

Nothing to special here, but any thoughts?

Well, I'm pretty sure your chances are 0 if you continue referring to Chicago as Chitown.

Sorry, I mean "The University of Chicago."

How difficult is your curriculum? I.e., have you taken honors or AP classes? A heavy course load? Do you write really well? Do you like to read or study extra topics in your spare time? To be a good fit for UChicago, you need to show academic intensity.

There is great stuff in there. I suspect a Jordanian-American class president / basketball captain from Texas with good grades will get a look no matter what. There can't be a boatload of those in the application pool!

That said, a few comments:

Your SAT scores are obviously a weak point, below the Chicago middle 50% range (and below what your ACT composite would suggest). It looks like you should be submitting only your ACT score, but you should probably be retaking that; another point or two would make you look stronger.

No one belongs in Latin Club, Spanish Club, French Club, AND German Club. You don't have to quit them if you really love them all, but you shouldn't be putting them all on your activities list unless you have a great story to tell about it (and you tell it). It makes you look completely un-serious, and calls into question whether others of your ECs are fake-o.

And, as others have said, finding a way to communicate that you're a Jordanian-American class president / basketball captain who is really turned on by intellectual inquiry is the most important thing. Make certain that your recommenders will say that, and that your essays *show/i it.

Good luck!

You have the same chance as usual. Luckily Chicago gives a lot less weight to SAT scores than most other factors. Libby's thread seems to make that pretty clear.

Ditto. :)

JHS, you are such a fabulous addition to the Chicago board! I'm glad you finally decided to join in around here.

Well greennblue was asking for my curriculum and here is an idea. My school does not offer that many AP's, but since Freshmen year, I have taken all honors or Ap's that fit in my schedule. For example this year my schedule should look something around this:

2.English IV-AP
3. Biology AP
3. Latin IV-AP
4. Calculus-AP
5. Pals (its this thing for seniors to basically help out elementary school kids)
6.Government-AP
7. Student council
8. Basketball

perhaps this will make you feel better.

I was accepted into chicago no problem.

I got 30 on ACT and SAT was a 650/710/660

GPA at time of applying was 4.15

I took 5 AP classes Sr year, 3 junior year, and 1 sophomore year.

However, I am an excellent writer and owned the essays. I also had research experience at MD Anderson Cancer Center which probably made me stand out.

See...we have similar quantitative stats, but I had many other things to make up for par scores. So I'm telling you that you do have a shot!

i thought i might be able to help you feel a little better too.
