Hi you all :]

I'm going to be a senior this year at my high school in Florida and I'm considering Clemson as a potential university to attend. My GPA is not the greatest due to my rigorous course load throughout high school (around a 3.7), but weighted it comes closer to a 4.5-4.6. I scored a 1920 the first time i took my SATs, with a 1280 (700 reading, 580 math) combined reading and math. I took it again and felt confident that i did MUCH better on the math. I have a 31 on my ACTs, but i took that test again as well. Still waiting for the scores on both of those. I will be graduating with a total of 7 passed AP courses (Bio, Psych, Lang, Lit, Gov/Econ, Spanish, Calc). Since I'm out of state, I was wondering if these stats are enough to get me in.

Also, it seems to me like the area surrounding Clemson is pretty quiet in regard of things to do. What type of activities do you all do?? How is the nightlife?

One more thing :] I read some things concerning financial aid with this school, all of them negative. Is it really that hard to attain need-based financial aid there!?

thanks guys!

Hey! I’m not sure what your GPA corresponds to since every school has a different scale but your SAT/ACT scores look good and if you have at least a B+ average, you should get in!

I’m kinda busy at the moment and commenting on social life might take a while so I’ll try to get back to that question at a later time!

As for financial aid, Clemson isn’t exactly the most generous school in terms of financial aid. It shouldn’t be hard to get need-based financial aid if you really need it. Otherwise, the only likely source of scholarships is academic scholarships and the only real shot you have at getting a major scholarship there is that if you are in the top 10% of your HS class and have an ACT or 31 or SAT of 1370, you can qualify to get in-state tuition (and sometimes these people receive other smaller scholarships as well)

i think my school’s gpa runs on a 4.0 scale.

but okay fair enough

anddd i have both those things… that scholarship would definitely make the school a lot more affordable!

My son was offered a spot in the Honors program and an OOS waiver. His gpa, from a Florida school, was only slightly higher than yours. His SAT total was 2000.

I’d say you’ve got an excellent chance of admission.

Wow that’s really great! Did he decide to attend?

But okay, thank you!

No. Although Clemson was his number one consideration he ultimately chose Florida State, a school we all found very similar in many ways. The opportunity to attend FSU tuition-free was one too good to turn down.

Oh okay I see. i think I’m going to end up in the same situation since i have pre-paid college and the highest bright futures, which would pretty much make FSU free. Does your son like it at FSU? And also, what is his major?

I don’t wish to turn this into an FSU thread. :)

Feel free to private message me if you’d like or ask a question in the FSU forum.

let me first just say that in general, Clemson is better than FSU
But of course finances are important so if you still cannot afford Clemson over FSU even with in-state tuition, I definitely understand it but if price is no factor, Clemson is the better choice.

haha the area surrounding it definitely is!!! i would hate to be stuck in Tallanasty… and honestly price is not a huge factor. but considering that grad school is coming after, it would be nice not to dig myself too big of a hole… and then have to lay in it for the rest of my life… lol anyway what makes clemson so much better in your opinion?!

There is a difference between “cannot afford” and an intelligent, reasoned comparison. :)

If price was no factor (as in someone else was paying for it) I agree with you. With the difference being close to $50,000 in tuition alone? Sorry, I love your school but…

FSUDAD1, I’m glad that you are choosing to bring your enthusiasm of FSU (IDK why) to the Clemson board haha, the OP is going to be getting in-state tuition from Clemson which makes the cost very reasonable (about $20,000 a year including housing/food/books). In addition, Clemson according to US News is the 23rd best public university while FSU is 47th. Clemson was ranked #9 in US News for up-and-coming schools, #12 for its commitment to undergraduate education.

I have no idea what schools in Florida you can get free tuition in but if you want to go to grad school, take a look at New College of Florida. Excellent small public school that will give you a more personalized education than FSU.

Not saying that FSU is a bad school which it isn’t. Just saying that Clemson is a better option for a decent price :)

pierre- If you re-read the thread you will see that I only replied here to answer a specific question posed by the OP that I had direct knowledge of. In fact, when posed a question about FSU, I answered it and then deflected continuing down that path on this board. That is not 'bringing enthusiasm", that is providing an experienced answer. :)

I only returned to respond to you. You are a wonderful advocate for your university and prove a great resource on this board.

Clemson is a fine school and anyone that chooses to attend has made a fine choice.

haha FSUDAD1, sorry about that last post as I was being a little bit too sarcastic there :)

Feel free to come back whenever to give any advice if you feel it is needed!

just an update, got my new SAT scores.*

reading - 660 (down from 700)
math - 640 (up from 580)
writing - 740 (up from 640)

this is a 2,040 total, 1,300 math and reading. my combined highest scores would be a 2,080, and a 1,340 math and reading. i improved a full 160 points from the last time (1,920)! is that significant?!

also forgot to mention my subject tests. idk if clemson looks at them though…

bio m - 710
literature- 750
spanish - 680

That is a huge move, congratulations.

You should qualify for acceptance into the Calhoun Honors College at Clemson and an OOS waiver. Make sure that you have your SAT and AP scores sent to the university. If you do, they will most likely extend to you a provisional acceptance letter during the summer and and offer to apply for free.

Oh wow thanks!

And that is amazing! Very exciting!! Thank you for your input! I’ll be sure to send all my scores over once I find out my AP scores. Should be mid-July.

Well you have the ACT score (31) needed for consideration for the OOS tuition waiver but your SAT score is still below the minimum 1370 score for consideration so I would send your ACT score. Also, in order to get the out of state tuition waiver, you would need to be in the top 10% of your high school class.

I’m actually not sure how provisional acceptance works but I’m pretty sure all you need to do is send your SAT/ACT score (do not think you have to send AP scores). I’d contact admissions to get a correct answer on the steps to get provisional acceptance:
