which department are u aiming for?

If you're aiming for CIT - I was accepted with VERY VERY similar stats.

whats CIT?

i might apply undeclared. or do i need declare a major? o_O

thanks for the advice/help

I'm almost positive you need to declare a college that you are applying to (i.e fine arts, engineering, computer science)

CIT = Carnegie Institute of Technology = Engineering

hmm which one is the easiest to get into?

also, if i declare one, can i switch to another one?

Is Carnegie Mellon going to be looking at the SAT I Writing score this year?

switching isnt that easy at all. none are EASY to get into - but i think humanities school has the lowest statistical average.

ah, how about business? o_O

You could probably get into Tepper (I think you have a good shot at every department), but you really should choose a school based on what you want to do, not which is easiest to get into. IIRC you have to write an essay about why you picked your first-choice school.

You can pick a first choice and a second choice school, if you want, and you will be accepted/rejected independently. I wouldn't count on transferring into your preferred school because ALOT of people I've talked to really want to transfer into other schools or try double majors in popular schools.

Your stats will be valued differently depending on what school you apply to. For example, if you apply to the School of Computer Science (SCS), your math SAT score will be more important than if you're applying to Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). Conversely, if you apply to HSS, your writing and verbal SATs will be more important than they would be when applying to SCS.

It's also better to know which school you want to go into so you can be specific in your essays and thus have a better chance of getting in. If you don't seem to know about the structure of CMU (the 7 sub-schools), that will imply, to the admissions committee, that you're really not very interested, and that could hurt you. Just the fact that you have to ask "what's CIT?" shows that you haven't looked at CMU in-depth. If you're serious about getting in, you better change that.

ThinkDifferent: You have a very good point.

Looking at my Stats (High Math scores in SATI and SATII and a near perfect in chemistry), I would probably have a better chance in the science/engineering department -- correct? However, my primary interset is Business/Economics. However, I have NO AP history courses and my verbal/writing scores are too high. What should I do if i'm in such a conflict and i WANT to get in? Apply as engineering, which is my second choice after econ/business, or just go for busi/econ? Thanks for the advice

Because you're accepted by school, don't assume that you'll be able to transfer once you get there. Many people accepted into H&SS try to transfer into business. If business is your primary focus, I would apply to buisness as first choice and engineering as second choice. You can always decide later whether or not you want to do engineering undergrad. Remember that you can always get an MBA, and an engineering degree is a good foundation for one. It gives you a specialization and proves that you can think logically.

Just do it like this on your application:

Tepper

H&SS

CIT

thank you. but more on chances in general? =)

I personally think you have a good shot in all schools but computer science (which is a slight reach).

**ring,
p,
[M]y,
[P]ost!!!

Thanks guys =)

yah my advice is to apply to two seperate colleges within cmu. i only applied to HSS and i got in after waitlist, but i realized later that i wanted tepper. If you get rejected, you can always transfer or double major, but I hear its really hard. I'll tell you after I get there this year how hard it really is! haha good luck though. your stats are really good, better than mine, and you have a lot to go for you. keep in touch! by the way, are you from cali?! if so, what school do u go to cuz I kno someone with the same stats as you!!

zh0u, i also got accepted (chemeng) with almost identical stats (my weighted was slightly higher - 4.17 - but the unweighted was the same).

:)
