Chances at CMU/NYU

Hey everyone. I'm a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh (main campus of course). My concentration is Business (likely finance or accounting).

These are my grades from the first semester.
Basic Musicianship(piano): A-
Micro Economics Honors(highly regarded, class of 22 and the only honors out of roughly 600 students allowed in): B- (was supposed to be a B, but I missed it by literally 1.2%)
Psychology: A-
Elementary Russian: A-

My cumulative: 3.53 (which puts me on the honors accreditation and Dean's list).

So do I have any sort of chance at NYU Stern or CMU Tepper? I'm also taking 18 (maximum) credits next semester with very challenging classes. I also have a "real life" internship coming up where I'll be working at the best UPMC hospital executive administration. I'll be on a team working on an actual project for the hospital.

When I talked to CMU, they said the past years they havent even had spots for transfer students and as for NYU a 3.5+ should be competitive but the average is around 3.6,3.7 and your high school grades and SAT will still be weighted heavily.

yeah, I've spoken to the CMU advisors. But what about my 2nd semester? Think that could sway it in my favor? Especially since your first semester is the toughest.

The most recent information for transfer at CMU is from USNews. In 2005, 15% of applicants were accepted. While you should always apply if you have the desire to, it is unlikely that a 3.5 from UPitt will be part of the 15% (or less it sounds like) that are accepted.

NYU Stern accepted 28% of transfer applicants in 2006, according to the NYU website. Your GPA is a bit low, but the real problem I see is your courseload, which is - sorry to say - weak.

If you are serious about Stern, it is imperative that you plan to take the prereqs next semester...which will be pretty tough to complete.

To my knowledge, the following are required to be considered for Stern: Microecon, Calculus I, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Academic Writing. So, less econ, there's your schedule for next semester ;)

The grades receieved in the prereq classes are by far the most important ones, so the B- would have been more favorable had it been received in Pyschology or Elementary Russian.

They may not require transfer students with only one year of college to complete all of the prereqs, so I'd check. Still, you'll be up against students that, regardless of their time in college, do have all the prereqs completed as desired by Stern. Good luck.

good info brand_182. Well...next semester I'm taking:
Macro economics honors
Seminar in Composition honors
Business Calculus
Elementary Russian 2
Nuclear Age, Nuclear War

Is that course load a bit more competitive?

I'm glad it helped.

Yes, to me, that looks much more challenging. I would still check with Stern to see if they require the prereqs even for students like yourself that will have only been in college for a year. Also remember that even if they do say it's okay to not have all of the prereqs completed, there may be students that have been hellbent on Stern since before they started their freshman year that planned their schedules so that they would finish all prereqs in a year. Those people, if they exist (and I'd imagine a few do), will have an upper hand.

I would also make sure Business Calculus is an ok substitution for Calculus I. Believe it or not, I've seen a lot of people try to transfer to UTexas McCombs but couldn't because Business Calc wasn't considered equivalent to Calculus I. Even though the school said it was technically "ok" to take Business Calc, they noted that they preferred Calc I, and when it came down to a limited number of spots, those that followed the recommended path had the upper hand. Stern may have the same problem...or may not.

I thought that cmu tepper doesn't get any transfer students

they do, but after they accept/reject every HS student, then if there are any slots open they'll look for transfer students

ok, so I officially got my GPA which is 3.53, so what are my chances if I get the 4.0 next semester?

Students seeking transfer from other universities

The Tepper School Undergraduate Business Administration Program does not accept transfer students from other universities.

this is what i found..it's on their website so could you give me a link that says
they do accept transfer students? I'd appreciate it

thank you

Don't quote me on this but I swear I read that Stern's requirement for Calc can't be met by the Business Calc class.

I'll try and find it where I saw that when I get the chance.

Basically they want you to fill the pre-reqs as much as you can. However, they do know that sometimes you just can't take the classes. I know at my school, accounting is split up into two classes, one is a pre-req for the other, and only able to be taken if you're a sophomore or above, and in very special cases, 2nd semester freshmen.

I had to get approval from the advisors of that college and then a recommendation from teachers to get into my accounting class for next semester.

On the NYU official transfer forum (NYU.edu) on the Stern section, someone asked the question of whether Business Calc was ok and the admin said they ask for Calculus specifically, so it would be bad to take Business Calc if you could have taken Calc I.

^ haha stupid of me to look everywhere but there
