Chances at College of Engineering?

Only a Junior now, but this is my current profile. Will I have a good chance at the College of Engineering

ACT: 30 (E:31, M:29, R:32, S:27)
Unweighted GPA: 3.5
Weighted GPA: 4.2

APs: US History, European History, Physics B, Spanish, Human Geography*
*to be taken senior year

Extra Curriculars: 2 years of Baseball (I'm a little weak in the EC department; I should've kept playing Baseball)

I live in Chicago
I'm an African-American Male
I've visited the campus
Whitney M. Young Magnet High School (pretty good school, though everyone says their HS is good lol)

I'm a bit nervous on my lack of extra curriculars. But this is because I didn't want to apply for something I didn't want to do. I don't want to suffer in NHS or Key Club just to pad a college application.

I would call it a reach for you based on your ACT, espcially the math section. Also, your courseload isn’t too heavy in the math and sciences (besides Physics). All my friends who are going to U of I for engineering have 3.8+ UW GPAs and are in the hardest math and science classes that my school offers. However, White Young is a good school. That combined with the fact that you’re in Chicago give you a shot at getting in. I’m just one dude so don’t think too much of my opinion. Good luck.

Yeah, YOu should not listen to guy above.

I will say you have 99% getting in to U of I with saving 1% as some random incident such as losing application.

You ACT is solid, your ehtinicity will definitely boost you up.

I am going to COE for Chem E and I know you are definitely in if I got in.

Heh, my school won’t let me take AP Calculus, which annoys me. I didn’t have any credits coming in, so I had to start with Algebra -> Geometry -> Algebra II Trig -> Precalculus. I really hate that. I could’ve taken AP Chemistry, but I had a bad teach a year earlier in general chemistry and it kind of put me off from the subject, so I opted out. AP Biology is more about living organisms than physical science, which I enjoy more.

And yeah, I wish my Math was a little higher. My first ACT math score was a 24, so its a pretty nice jump.

Thank you for the quick and realistic response Taxi. Hopefully I’ll get in; this is my ultra first choice school.

Ya, I definitely wouldn’t count it out at all. Just work hard on your application and apply early.

yakyu, I don’t know if you’re familiar with ■■■■■■■■■■ but it allows you to create a profile of your grades, scores, etc and plots you against other users who have applied to certain schools. You can visually see how you fall amongst kids who’ve been accepted and declined. You can also look at the “probability-calculator” which estimates your chances of acceptance based on their large database. Of course, it’s university-wide and not engineering-specific, but it’s pretty useful. My junior son and I use it all the time and based on it, I’d say your chances are high.

And no, I have no affiliation with cappex and am not plugging it except as a possible help to you and others.

I know this is a week old but I agree with rifelife 99% chance. Apply early, check the priority deadline, beat it by a few weeks AND write good essays! I think UIUC is a comfortable match for your stats and you might want to add a few reaches to your college list. The scatter plots are very helpful as well.

If he was trying any other college at U of I, then yes, he’d have a 99% chance. But with engineering a 30 is really the lowest end of the spectrum ACT-wise. I’d say he has a 50-50 chance.

Take the next math at the local community college in the summer and/or in the fall evenings. Top schools will wonder why no math senior year.

Why if your not taking any math senior year unless you have passed everything your school has to offer I would doubt it. 30 act is very low to get in

I never said I wasn’t taking math senior year…

My school is only letting me take Precalculus, which I am registered for

Have you thought of applying to Marquette for engineering? It’s not too far from you, and I would bet you’d get some good aid. Good engineering school and lots of Chicago connections.

That’s fine. AP Calculus blows. I got a 5 on the AB exam and really didn’t understand calculus very well. It’s better to take it in college, where you know you’ll learn it well. APs are really only good for getting geneds out of the way.

Those guys who are telling you that you have no shot don’t know much. You have a really good chance of getting in.
