nothing that great. I'm not the wonderful academic superstar like most of you guys but I do alright. Mostly I'm involved with community groups and the arts.

anyone? you guys all know way more than i do.

honestly, what are you talking about? A 2290 SAT's (not to mention 1590 M+CR) is obviously not "nothing that great." Your GPA is respectable. Only your E.C.'s seem on the weaker side, otherwise overall you look fine.

yeah but those ec's will get you, there are plenty of 2290's with great ec's applyin to HYPS, however in sure u will get in or at leats have a legitamate chance at most of the schools u listed above

yeah my test scores are good but i don't have the 4.3 GPA with the brutal courseload like a lot of people i'd be in competition with.

I'd say your GPA might be a little low for HYPS. Although I don't know how hard your school is or how hard your course load is. Your ECs seem lacking because they don't appear to reflect your interests and future goals. But either way, you look good you just need some improvements. I stil say you have a great shot at Cornell, Columbia, NU and UVa. You can never tell with HYPS but I would say apply and see what happens because you'd definitely be a strong applicant.

Are you kidding? A 1590 SAT and a 3.85 u/w GPA with those 10 AP Classes you are taking makes you competetive at ANY school you could apply to, including HYPMS as long as you have some sort of personality to back it up with.

I agree.

What is wrong with a 3.85, considering a tough course load?

Nothing's really wrong with it. I said he'd be a strong applicant at any school (that would include HYPMS) but I'm just saying that there are enough people out there with the same stats plus a 3.95+ GPA who are applying to HYPMS so it's not as good of a chance as the other schools, but he still has a good chance. My friend goes to MIT and when he applied he said would you rather have the student who has an A in an honors class or the student who has a B in an AP class. And they said neither. They only take the kids with A+s in APs.

It depends on your rank, how big is your h.s.? Are you top 5%? 10%? Is your high school a feeder? All these things matter.

I think if you are top 5% you have a great shot at these schools. Consider your choices though, Columbia is NOTHING like Uva, Cornell, NU, etc.

I know, I went there and transferred out.

Your stats are fine and you def. have a shot at the schools you listed. But keep in mind that UVA is extremely hard for OOS kids to get into. My d and another kid from her class applied ED to UVA- they both were rejected and coincidentally they are both now completing their freshmen year at Cornell-ILR school. So for New York kids, it may be easier to get into Cornell/Columbia than UVA.--BUT- UVA recently started a Marching Band. (keep in mind I haven't been actively looking at UVA website this past year) so as you are in competitive marching band you may want to pursue that avenue. I get the impression that UVA will take OOS if you have something to offer them that they need--like Sports-Band etc. As they have so many well qualified kids from OOS, you need that extra something that they are looking for. PS. I like Cornell better than UVA anyway. And for NY kids, Cornell may be less expensive. Good luck.

I appreciate all the help. Thanks.

Oh and I appreciate the people saying that I wouldn't get into HYPS. I couldn't agree more. I didn't work hard enough in high school to deserve a spot there. Also, anyone who expects acceptance at those places is somewhat delusional.

my GPA was significantly worse than yours (3.7UW), with 10 APs over high school, 1550 on the old SAT (800 on writing, dono if you can just add it on?), and i was top 10% in my school (the first distinction is 5%) and i got into northwestern, hopkins, and upenn. i think if you have a passion for something and emphasize that, and make your interviews count, you have an decent to awesome shot at all the schools listed above; a girl at my school with similar stats to you got into UVA's echol's scholars program.

I'd say that Columbia is the only school that you don't really stand much of a chance at.

All of the rest I think you will stand an excellent chance at. The fact that you are an eagle scout is especially impressive.

I didn't say you necessarily couldn't get into HYPS. You never know, they could be looking for someone with your characteristics to balance the class, but I'm saying realistically probably not. If you want though I would apply and see what happens, you never know.
