Chances at Cornell, John Hopkins, Amherst, C. Mellon, Notre Dame? (Will Chance Back)

Alright, so in all seriousness, I really haven't got the slightest clue as to whether I've made any effective decisions or not, and I'd really like some feedback on my chances at Amherst College, Carnegie Mellon, John Hopkins, Notre Dame University, and Cornell University

Being an asian male is a bit of an anti-hook, but you are definitely a qualified candidate for some of them. What’s your major? Your chances for some depend on that. I’m guessing math/sciences?
Amherst: high match
CMU: mid/high match
JHU: high match
Notre Dame: match
Cornell: mid/high match (don’t know too much about their legacy policy)
You should also look at more safety schools.

I think you have a great chance at all of them.

In fact, I would shoot higher.

Solid stats!! I feel like you are high matches for all, except Cornell, since Ivy Leagues are just not predictable. But yeah, maybe expand the list? Northwestern? Vandy? Best of luck!

chance back please =)
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1164754-chance-columbia-upenn-uchicago-4.html#post13137453</a></p>

4.0 GPA w/ 6 APs? 36 ACT? You’ll probably get into most (if not all) of those colleges. You should shoot higher. Your grades and standardized scores are almost perfect…

If you weren’t an Asian male, I’d say in at all, but since you are… In at everywhere except Amherst and Cornell. Great chances at Cornell, even though you’re unhooked. At Amherst, I’m not so sure, nothing sets you apart from the other… numbers, like top LACs look for.

Layerd-
Thank you for your insight. Chanced you back.

Shimmer-
My major will likely be in Biological Sciences, because at the moment, I hope to attend Medical School after Undergrad
How much can my major actually affect me getting into any one of these schools?

Flor and Kieran-
I was actually hoping for Harvard and MIT before, but when I posted a while ago, most of the replies indicated that because of my gender-ethnicity combo, it would be very unlikely for me to get into either of them.

Other schools I am looking at are Northwestern and UChicago, although both are very VERY close to me, as I am an Illinois resident.

Good chances at all of those schools!

Wow excellent stats. I think you’ll do fine anywhere. While I don’t see that you’re really into Biology with your ECs I think that you’re excellent record is enough for you to be accepted

Amherst College - not sure; haven’t looked into LACs
Carnegie Mellon - match/you might be in.
John Hopkins - I think you fit their type
Notre Dame University - not sure
Cornell University - I don’t know if legacy helps but if it does most likely you will get in. Otherwise I think bio is a tough major there? not sure. But if it isn’t you’ll have good standing whereas if it is tough, its hard to tell

Hope I helped!

Your race and gender don’t discount you at all…all schools obviously accept some (many!) Asian males every year. Good luck :)

Don’t give up on Harvard or MIT. Tons of Chinese males get into them each year!

Haha Beast, you should go HYPSM one of them ED. Your bound to get into at least 1/5.

I think that the legacy status at Cornell only helps if you apply ED. I’d think you’d have a very, very good chance there if you so chose to apply ED.

Noragon-

I considered that before, but I found out that the two that I really hoped to get into (Harvard and MIT), had no early-decision programs, which means that even as an Early-Action applicant, I would gain no real advantage (besides knowing sooner).

I think my plan right now is to apply to most of my safety schools Early-Action, along with UChicago and MIT. This way, I will hear from them sooner, and if I get into any of them, I will have peace of mind before I send the regular-decision applications, knowing that I got into at least some schools.

I’m going to address your EC’s, because others have already told you about your solid academic stats.

You have done what I am trying to get others to do. You picked 2-3 activities, and YOU STUCK WITH THEM. You went above and beyond in these activities instead of simply showing up to the meetings. Simply outstanding. Now see if you can take them a bit further (maybe more nationals?) in the next 3 months.

Plus, a question (sorry if you already addressed this); Why not try for HYP?

holycrap a 36. solid academics (maybe overqualified for these schools), i like your ECs from the point of view that you are “showing passion” for these activities. If you had more, it would show breadth as well as depth. decent chances

chance me back ;)

Bioboy-

Thank you for the feedback. The reason I didn’t consider HYP (as I described above), is because last time I posted a thread asking for my chances at Harvard and MIT, the general consensus was negative, so I figured I had to take it a step lower (the only reason I’m still applying to MIT right now is because it is a non-restrictive early action and I have nothing to lose).

Bigaznbamf-

I would be happy to chance you back, but first I need you to link me to your thread, since I can’t seem to find it right now

Amherst: match
CMU: match
JHU: match
Notre Dame: match
Cornell: match- legacy almost guarantees it with your scores/GPA

Overall, academics are excellent! But, extracurriculars could improve (i don’t think this will affect you due to a 4.0/36 ACT status)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1173642-new-member-chance-me-please.html</a></p>

Wow. It’s people like you that make me not even want to apply to any colleges  The only negative part of your app is that you’re an over-represented minority, but even with that I’d say you have a really REALLY good shot at all the schools. I’d honestly be surprised if you were rejected from any (but Amherst will the toughest)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1204121-chance-potential-classics-major-please-ill-super-grateful.html</a></p>

You SHOULD aim high and apply to HYPSM.
It is more difficult for Asian males but YOU MIGHT BE THE LUCKY ONE.

I think you have solid chances at Cornell, CMU and Notre Dame.

EA to Chicago and MIT is a great idea.
Solid chances at Chicago if you have good essays

Chicago: Show your passion for learning in why Chicago essay.
JHU: You have to request an interview. I think the deadline was November 1st. (I might be wrong.)

Did you get an invitation to apply for the diversity weekend at Amherst?
